Post by Math23x7 on Fri Mar 16, 2018 7:37 pm

I have brought this up before but back in 2013 when the 7-online weather chat board was shut down, so was pretty much every post made on there.  These were posts which included discussions of big weather events as they were unfolding including the Boxing Day 2010 blizzard, the late-January 2011 Godzilla, hurricane Irene, the October 2011 snowstorm, and hurricane Sandy.  Fortunately, because there is an online tool for archived web pages and because I stored the URL somewhere, I was able to access old pages from that old chat board to prove its existence.  However, there were only a small number of threads and posts I was able to access.  That's because it is users that send the links to the archives (I am not one of those).  Here is what one of the last webpages of that old forum looked like (this is from August 16th, 2013):

This was shortly after WABC meteorologist Bill Evans (username Bevans777) announced the board was shutting down ("Dear Folks on the Chat").  Here, he discussed that the board would soon shut down.  I'm also assuming that the "Franks Weather Board" thread from Ryan was used to direct people from that board to this one.  Unfortunately, the threads themselves were not archived.  As a result, when you click on the thread on the archives site, it will return an error since there is no such entry.

Now, the writing was on the wall for the board since it was poorly moderated.  It was that January that Frank decided he would leave the 7-online forum and create one of his own.  For just over two months, this was called the NYC Metro Weather Forum.  Because I saved that old URL, I was able to plug that in and got a couple of webpages just to show how small the community was.

Here is one from January 18th, 2013:

And here is one from February 14th, 2018:

It was the following month that Frank changed this site's name to the NJ Strong Weather Forum.  When I typed that into the Wayback Machine, there are several entries the months that followed that have low quality.  The earliest I could find with good quality is dated October 5th, 2013:

Looking back, I would have loved it if all of the threads from the 7-online chat board had been saved for historical purposes.  If, god forbid, something were to happen to this forum that would result in it getting shut down, I would hope that all of the posts would not go with it as well.  There have been well over 100,000 posts made on this forum the past five plus years.  And many of the threads contain some valuable information that can be used for future references.  It would really be a shame if we were to lose all of this information.

Folks,

As an educator of 26 years I have had my fair share of ups and downs with parents, students, administration and peers. This one has struck me to the core though. A student of my mine made the horrible decision today to take his life by jumping off the Garden State Plaza parking garage deck this morning. This is the third such incident we have had in our school (the other 2 were alumni - Madison Holleran a national story back in 2014? yes a NH grad and then her good friend Mike Menakis 2 months later at TCNJ). Our school is rocked to teh core with this one cause he was our, my student who sat at Station #19 in the CAD LAB in my CAD 2 class. I had the pleasure of teaching his oldest sister back in 2006 and had his brother and his other sister in classes. I have the dubious task tomorrow of seeing this class that this young man was in and I ask for your prayers to give me strength to be strong and stand before them not only as their teacher but as another adult human being who mentors these young people. To give them a message that they will understand and be realistic about. I stood before my soccer program in 2006 to deliver a message that one of our own program brothers passed from a brain tumor. That was not easy but for some reason this one is hitting harder. I also want to pray for his family and his friends that they maybe able to get through this most difficult time. May he, Angel (yes that is his name) rest in eternal peace.

So sorry mugs, when I saw the story, I thought of you and my sister-in-law immediately. So sad that kids feel lost and feel they have no other option. Sending prayers to you, your colleagues, students and his family and friends. May he rest in peace.
