Nice I'm very familiar with that area. It's right by 271st street, the highest numbered street in NYC. Also nearby is the Lake Success shopping center, which I usually visit several times a year.

To be fair, that looks about right. Doesn't seem like any acclumating snow made it as far west as Manhattan. Some reports of 2" in eastern Queens, closer to an inch in central to western Queens and near zero west of that.CPcantmeasuresnow wrote:Yesterdays totals
Laguardia 1.0 inch
JFK 1.7
Newark 0.2
Cent. Park 0.1
Every event minor and major so far and Central Park keeps coming in low, no major discrepancies yet, the biggest fumble was dropping the ball after 7PM on Jonas but the performance by the Conservancy so far is better than the Zoo but far from perfect.

Re: Central Park totals worse than ever.
Tone I got two inches yesterday mostly on grassy surfaces and most of it came in one hour although it snowed for four straight hours. I was measuring as the snow was falling once the snow lightened up you can see that melting started taking place especially in the Sun. I know that I am colder than New York City I am 10 miles north of Central Park and just west of LaGuardia. I don't know how they measure on what surface, if its in the Sun or the shade but obviously they do something incorrect. I guess we have to ask what's the best representation of snowfall. is it only on grass is it only on paved surfaces is it in the shade or the Sun because I had different measurements in different spots yesterdayDtone wrote:To be fair, that looks about right. It's suppose to be in an undisturbed spot on a snowboard so it will accumulate immediately, and out of the sun, and measured right when it ends to minimize melting and contraction. They obviously do none of these things.

cp not just cpk but most locations. there is no way lga had 1" of snow yesterday. that's a worse measurement than the park.

Even if the current snow accumulates in CPK today, we know that it won't be measured because the snow began after 7 AM and should be over well before 1PM, and the aforementioned times are when snow measurements are made...

Re: Central Park totals worse than ever.
In the overnight squalls LGA picks up 0.7 inches, Newark 0.1 and right in between them Central Park a trace. I'm nitpicking but so far this season I don't see much of an improvement from the Conservancy. And yes a lot of it stems from the January 23rd storm and the failures after 7pm and midnight.
So far this year on every event major and minor Central Park has come in low on the totem pole vs. LGA, JFK and Newark. The odds on that happening are extremely low.
I'll still give the Conservancy a higher grade than the zoo but not by much.

Re: Central Park totals worse than ever.
CPK definitely got more than a trace yesterday. They must've did that measurement at 7am when the sun came out and melted most of the snow overnight. Just looking from the radar that band definitely hit CPK like it did the Bronx and LGA.
As for the other day CPK measured 0.1 with 0.05 of precip while LGA measured 1.0 with 0.06 of precip.
I think the zookeeper is still doing the measurements for the conservancy lol. They've been marginally better at best only IMO.

Judging by the measurements at LGA, JFK and Newark this season, CPK is about 3-4 inches under measured this year. So to sum it all about for all the hoopla and change with the 20 people they trained at the Conservancy nothing has really changed. If there is no one there to measure it's like it never happened.

At 7am
Central Park 0.4
LGA 0.6
JFK 0.9
EWR 1.0
The Conservancy low again as they have been all season. Looks like NOAA traded in one worthless group (Central Park Zoo) for another.
No surprises. It will be interesting to see if any update beyond that.

Re: Central Park totals worse than ever.
And the totals for today March 4, 2016 are in.
LGA 1.2 inches
JFK 1.4 inches
Newark 1.4 inches
and surprise, surprise Central Park 0.4 inches.
It's time to end the experiment. The Zookeeper was horrible, the Conservancy this year has been worse. They F'd up what should have been the all time greatest snowfall in NYC and every minor event since.
Seasonal totals
Central park 31.6
LGA 35.6
JFK 40.9
Newark 36.2
Very doubtful the man in the geographic middle of it all is low man on the totem pole by that much.
They can change the players all they want but the incompetence remains the same. Zookeeper or Conservancy = I don't give a sh!t about measuring snow. Year after year after year.
I give up

Even though this was a minor event, that was way off in CPK. Some moderate snow made it north into NYC for a short time and they clearly missed that, never budged from .4"
Seems like they will never get it right on a consistent basis, they simply lack the dedicated round the clock staff that airports do. Central Park is fundamentally flawed as a climate station in many ways but its historical significance makes everyone reluctant to make any big changes.
I was hoping to get to 40" imby...i'll fall just short. 40" at JFK is nice though, they are usually the least snowiest of the NYC stations. That S & E trend on a micro level.

I guess the Conservancy conserves low snow totals.
CP, I and my kids wrote the email using the suggested format.
Does anyone know if there is ever a response or if there is a spokesperson who reps the Conservancy? What is talked about if not their reaction to criticism?

I asked Upton how much snow the conservancy measured this's morning. They replied that only a trace fell. If Boaton gets over 5.7" from this storm, it will overtake NYC in terms of 2015-16 seasonal snow total...

I am calling major BS. I'm only like 8miles from there and I had 2.75" on my grass as of 6:45am. This image is more than a trace and the sun has been out for 45mins and temp is 35*. Again I call BS.

In my mind, Central Park beat out 2006 in the Jan blizzard. Jan blizzard should be number 1. I got 30 inches in Brooklyn.
I dont think Boston got that much today

I got a trace here. It never stuck. Not even on the grass. Too mild. Outside of urban areas I could see a few tenths to an inch possible. But with such marginal conditions the urban heat island is one obstacle too much.
I've seen more favorable set ups have the same problem from mid March onward so this one doesn't surprise me.
It can vary just from neighborhood to neighborhood this time of year. Suburban like areas like eastern edges of Queens or more residential parts of eastern Bx and southern BK might get light acclumation but nothing a mile or to into a more busy area.

Logan airport's official snow measurement from this storm was 3.6" so NYC still leads Boston, albeit a fragile lead. Boston is at 29.5" and NYC is at 31.6"

FWIW, I live about 10 miles west of NYC and we got a trace (1/4 at most) on grassy areas.
