And for a first "official on-topic" post: Interesting move trading Ken Giles to Houston. There's no question a closer is a luxury you don't need when re-building and not expecting to compete for a playoff spot this year. And as a 25-year old coming off a great first season as a closer his value is high, allowing them to get four prospects. And the 4 prospects they got adds to what is an increasingly impressive depth of pitching prospects in the organization being accumulated over the past year, all of which may well pay dividends in the coming years. But . . . on the flip side, Giles is young and under club control for a few more years. If they do get good in another year or two, theoretically he could have been their closer when they're back in contention (and only age 27 or 28 at that). In that regard, exactly the type of guy you might want to keep while rebuilding and have as a more "experienced" yet young closer when it all comes together. It is new GM Klentak's first big move/gamble. And an interesting one that he may not be fully judged on for another three or more years.

On the last day of the NFL regular season, it is time to note: 45 days until pitchers and catchers report.

Two out of three on the road from a very good team. Good way to bounce back from a bad start in Cincy. This is going to a rough season but at this point in the project it's not about how many they win this year it's about how the young talent is developing/progressing and some of these guys are looking good - especially Velasquez last night.

I as a Met fan took a lot of heat over the last couple of months from others when I told them that the Phillies would win 81 games this year.  I think throughout the year, the 2016 Phillies will resemble the 2014 Mets, a team that was in transition mode a year before being a serious contender (which they were a year later).

I will be thrilled if they win 81 this year. I have them at about 77 wins, which isn't too far off. But you are right that they are (hopefully for Phillies fans) about where the Mets were 2 or 3 years ago. They have really stocked up on young talent in the past year and have a pretty deep prospect pool right now. Perhaps most importantly long-term they have virtually no salary committed beyond next year, which means if these young guys produce, they will 1. Be able to lock them in early at s discount and 2. Dip back into the free agent market to fill holes. I think last year was the bottoming out, this year is the beginning of trying to - slowly - climb back up.

9 innings, 16 K's, no walks, CG shutout. 25 K's in 2 games. If this kid Velasquez is half as good as he's looked, it verifies the wisdom of the Giles move, and along with Nola provides an intriguing foundation for this young starting rotation going forward.

Finally some offensive production. Franco picking right up where he left off last year, looks to be the real deal.

There is no team right now I enjoy watching us beat more than the Nationals. What a distasteful bunch of arrogant people in that organization. Let's get the sweep today.

Yeah bad news on Morton. We will do our best for a sweep once the rain ends. I know Phillies fans aren't supposed to want to help the Mets but I dislike the personalities on the Nats so much that I was actually rooting for the Mets down the stretch last year.

This Phillies team doesn't know they're not ready to win yet. In some ways that makes them more dangerous. Good young pitching makes up for a lot of other shortcomings in baseball.

Post by Math23x7 Sun May 15, 2016 1:23 am

A lot of people laughed at me in early April when I told them the Phillies would win over 80 games this year. And over the last couple of weeks, a lot of my fellow Mets fans have laughed at me when I tell them this team could be a postseason contender. They keep telling me they will fall out. But when you have Nola, Vallazquez, and Hellickson in your rotation, you're set to stay in it for some time. Fortunately, my Mets will not face them again until right after the All-Star Break. Interestingly enough, they will face each other in seven of the last ten regular season games of the year, including the last three games from September 30th to October 2nd. Of course, given how poorly the Mets have been playing lately who knows if it will matter (They play the NL East leading Nationals for the first time next Tuesday). But if they are in contentions, the Phillies will be a scary team. I still have the crushing memories at how the Phillies destroyed the Mets down the stretch in 2007 and 2008.

I remember you saying they could win over 80 games and even I thought that was high at the time. I had put them at mid-to-high 70s in wins (and some people even told me that was crazy. I still think the lack of punch in the lineup brings them back down to earth at some point but they have the talent on the mound (with some more in the farm system) and pitching often makes or breaks you. If they could find a way to match up some offensive production with this pitching, they could definitely hang in the race a long time. Of course all young pitchers go through struggles during a long season and that's where they'd need bats to pick them up.

And the NL East as a whole (minus the Braves) seems like a pretty tough division this year. If the season ended today (granted we're only at the 1/4 mark) both wild cards come out of the East.

And the Phillies beat the Marlins earlier so they are tied for first place. But there is still a long way to go. Their pitching has been good and their hitters are getting the hits at the right time. Gomez and Velasquez are doing great.

When you have the pitching there's no hitting, when you have the hitting there's no pitching. Is there ever a more common complaint about a losing baseball club? Always seems to work that way.
