Re: February 2016 Observations & Discussions

Post by CPcantmeasuresnow on Thu Feb 04, 2016 3:14 am

This is the 75,000th post in the official weather thread. I wish I could say something memorable on this historic occasion but in this the winter of my discontent I cannot. Other than one storm, you cannot call what we've had so far winter, it's just been an extended fall, or an early spring. I suppose it could be called either, but certainly I should not reference what's been going on since the middle of November winter.

I hope the 100,000th poster has something more memorable or at least more optimistic to say.

52.3 at 3am on February 4th. Enough said.

cp I feel ya man. so far cpk is +16* with a high of 59 for today you can add to that. by sunday cpk will be around +10*. no way February ends up below normal. not even close. however if we can time out a storm or two it will be the first time ever cpk averages 40* for winter with over 30" of snow. currently dec jan and early feb cpk is around 43*. as I have stated many times this winter there is no cold air and when we do get a cold shot it is only slightly below normal. we can thank hell-nino as it has flooded the northern hemisphere (esp north America and Canada) with unusually and impressive warm air. the pacific is a hot tub and really hasn't weakened as forecast.

Al this will only be the fourth winter in 147 years that averages above 40 degrees in NYC, 3 of the 4 have happened since 2001/02. The highest snowfall in any of those miserable seasons is 7.4 inches in 2011/12.

The previous 3 seasons all ended in the bottom 6 all time of the least amount of snowfall in one season. I guess that's the one thing to be thankful for about this shi!!y winter, Jonas. However no one north of I84 is celebrating Jonas.

wow I didn't realize that. since 2000, even with the ave temps rising, we have had a lot of snow for the most part. growing up from the late 60's,70's and 80,s snow was hard to come by but you new it was winter as there were many years in there with impressive cold. guess we were just unlikely with snow back then.

The amount of major to historic snowstorms in the 2000s is amazing. Depending on how old someone is they may think its normal to expect godlizilla+ snowfalls on a regular basis in the city and coast. I remember struggling to get above advisory level snowfalls unless you were N & W. There's the theory climate change and less ice at the poles etc effect weather patterns favoring big blizzards in the east but less consistent light & moderate snowfalls. Turning into more feast or famine type of winters. It harder to get snow on avg but when things do come together right it can be very explosive. I cant say one way or other how valid that is but the pattern the last decade or 2 is different.

Agree 100% and the bias of these huge snowstorms is for the areas S and E to get the most snow.It has changed.I verify all of your post because I have been observing winters since 1960 in this area.

I just left my house and deep snowpack. Driving up to daughters gymnastics meet in Putnam county. As we got near throggs neck bridge there was very little snow. Same in the Bronx. Now as we drive through westchester the snowpack was deeper but is beginning to dwindle as we head up the Taconic. What a weird scene. From close to a foot to nearly nothing to over 6" to now about 2 or 3. Strange

My point is that maybe the low measurements from NYC were accurate. Heat Island effect

Good to hear Syos. We can give the conservancy a pass on this one.

Five days into February we are 13 to 14° above normal for the month and most have already seen a significant snowfall. Who would've ever thought except our experts on this board. what a crazy fd up winter so far.

Central Park is now at 29.7 inches of snow for the season, already above its historical normal of 28.8 inches. Frank, Sroc, and Mugs all called for above normal snowfall in what may turn out to be the warmest meteorological winter ever, certainly we're a lock for the top five. Gutsy calls and they're all turning out correct. Looks like my prediction of 7.4 inches of snow from December through February bombed out, thank God.

Next week looks to be fascinating.

Valentines period may rival cold of last February. Those positive departures will turn negative by the time the month ends.

Cant believe just over 2 weeks ago we had a 30" historic blizzard that put down a snowpack ive never seen from a single storm, melted incredibly fast and got a 3-4" snowstorm the other day (would have been a lot more had it not been raining so much in beginning and ground warm) which was gone by end of day except on previous remaining snowpack in spots and in at least 75% of areas. Woke up to a winter wonderland, fell asleep for a few hours and it was gone. What a weird winter. Hopefully we can get some snow in the coming days and cold weather follows holds true, wanna see some ice on lakes and streams/rivers around here. IMO that makes a great winter, snow and cold. Right now its been snow and mild which i dont like. Want to see the Delaware and Raritan bays freeze over again this year (not gonna happen) but one can hope.

I could not agree with you more on this statement NJ. The only snow we've had all season was from the blizzard (15") which is long gone. Right now the weather in my area is BROWN and BOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGG !!!!!!!!! UGH !!!
