Re: December 2016 Observations & Discussions
Precip shield is filling in and moving east. Snow is becoming steady now and picking up in intensity. Temp rose to 29 before the snow started under thick cloud cover, now down to 24 after a quick drop once the snow started.

This morning I see 34 on the Iphone, 34 on the weather station, and 28 on the mercury on two different thermometers outside. The 1.5 inches we got is wet and heavy.

Re: December 2016 Observations & Discussions
RGEM had us in a bigtime snow event for last night, I think I'll stick with the HRRR. There are so many chances of precip this month, all a matter of timing. Snow to rain to snow, rain to snow, snow to rain.... UGH!

Re: December 2016 Observations & Discussions
I am keeping an eye on the snow threat for this Saturday. The EURO has warm air rushing in faster than the GFS so there are only minor snow accumulations before switching to rain. The GFS has it snowing, moderately, for a long period of time before it switches to rain. Either way we're switching to rain but it's a matter of determining how much front-end snow will fall. At the moment, thinking 2 to 4 inches for almost everyone, except central and coastal NJ. More like 1 to 2 inches there.

Re: December 2016 Observations & Discussions
And if you're wondering "how can it be in the 20's Saturday morning then temps rise into the 40's by the evening"
It is because of an unfavorably positioned High Pressure system. Once it moves off the coast, winds turn from the east to the south. Living along the coast, that will do a number on your chances for snow. Those southerly winds are sneaky!
Notice the wind contours showing the southerly winds.

Re: December 2016 Observations & Discussions
And on a larger scale, the reason we're seeing these unfavorably positioned High Pressure systems is because the pattern sucks. La Nina, no blocking, active Pac jet. UGH!
ALSO
One last thing
Can you tell I am on 2 shots of espresso this morning?
With the Polar Vortex swinging through New England the end of this week, not only will it be frigid, but there may be snow squalls on Thursday. Coatings to 1" possible across the area.

Re: December 2016 Observations & Discussions
Today's model continue showing a snow, ice, and rain threat for Saturday. At this time, I am thinking 2 to 4 inches of snow will accumulation for much of the area Saturday morning (beginning around 4am). It will change to a mix or freezing rain later Saturday morning then a plain rain by Saurday afternoon. The timing is still uncertain and exactly how much snow falls before the changeover is also iffy. GFS shows 3 to 6 inches while EURO is less bullish.
Either way, a storm is coming on Saturday. Clouds and rain will linger into all day Sunday. A miserable weekend ahead.

So we hate it when it's el Nino and we hate it when it's la Nina, so is there anything in between? El perro? El gato? La mujer?
