Something I find quite amazing. Even though the last two winters have been very warm, the two of them have produced an average of 26.65" of snow. And that number will go up if a) we get a little but of snow the next two months and/or b) The 1/7 and 1/14 snow totals for CPK get corrected.

NOAA just announced if we have one more meteorological winter like the one that just ended which preceded the second warmest meteorological winter ever last year, they will be eliminating December and February from meteorological winter.

The new periods will be:
Meteorological summer will still be June through August.
Meteorological fall will now be September through December.
Meteorological winter will just be the month of January.
Meteorological Spring will be February through May.

Just in case anyone takes this serious JK, but if trends continue maybe they should.

CP, maybe we could add floating season days. If it snowed in October, we could put that day into meteorological winter. Or if we had 70 degree days in January, we could put those days into meteorological summer.

When we hit solar minimum in the next 7 years maybe winters will be just that.
A massive volcanic explosion be happening during this time frame and we'll have months of BN averages and snow galore.
What science will find is that the massive nino has had the biggest hangover in the history of man. I actually posted about this back inAug/Sept froma guy in Eastern Mass I follow. How did we get there - super nino? Who knows but it has happened before and shall again. How will this affect the Holidays? Will they be moved to January? This is serious stuff. Should Football season also start late. Will baseball be longer? Man, I don't think they thought this through too well. What if there is an anomaly and it does snow in March?

JB wrote a great piece on what went wrong meteorlogically this winter. Shows scientific evidence of what occurred and makes all the perfect sense. He is a man who backs up his word and for that I have fol low and will continue to. A man of his word and will admit when he is wrong.

So since it has been warm as shhh-EYE-za I figured Id post this to give all a little laugh.  For those new to the board I had made a promise to the board that if we got another 6"+ snow storm I would do snow angels in my skivvies.  This was me on March 1st 2015 making good on that promise.  Temp was 22*F and the wind was howling so it was cold!!  LOL  Enjoy

Now I promise once again to one up this if we get another 6+ event this winter season. Count on it!!!

I posted this on April 7, 2016 and it is time to recycle it:

"Here is my weather synopsis for the year:

Winter: low snow. It sucked.
Spring: cold, rainy, snowy: It sucks.
Summer: very hot. It will suck.

I find myself already desperate to speed ahead to next Dec so I can stand outside, look up at the sky, and ask "Where's the snow?". "

Actually if the planet warms that much so NYC hits 85 in December life as we know it will probably cease to exist shortly thereafter if not before. Chaos and anarchy will rule and at that point lack of snow will be the last of any of our concerns.

Yeah Doc this accentuates how bad it has been through most of the midwest this season. It's only the far reaches of the upper midwest that have had a decent snow season pretty much the same as the northeast where it's the far northern areas that have done okay.

Omaha, Des Moines , Kansas City, St. Louis are all less than 10 inches on the season so far, some of them less than 5. Pitiful what winter is becoming. For Chicago to have no measurable snow in January or February is incredible and is something that has never happened in NYC even in our warmest winters.

CP, if this warming trend continues, the only places that will have significant snow will be Sierra Nevadas, Rockies, Lake Effect areas and far northern fringes.

I wouldn't worry too much about this being a trend. I well remember the late 80s/early 90s. Very, very little snow in this area. In fact, I went four years in high school without at a snow day (there may have been ONE that somehow I have forgotten). They actually did a skit at my school 'retiring' our "snow number" (for those who don't know what a snow number is, it is a number assigned to your school that they call out on the radio when your school closes for snow, rather than having to read the name of each school or district. It's a South Jersey/SE Pennsylvania thing. Since we had no snow days, it never got called. Hence the number retirement.). By 1994-1996 we were getting bitter cold winters with snow records. I don't discount the possibility of some warming trend globally, but nothing that would turn this into Miami Beach. It is largely cyclical. This too shall pass.

I'm not so sure about that.

In the last 16 months NYC has set records for the 3 warmest months ever in their 148 years of record keeping. November 2015, the ridiculous December 2015 and now February 2017. The years you reference for low snowfall were still much colder winters in comparison to what we've had lately. Snowfall only gives us a minor part of the story and can often be skewed from one storm, last years blizzard being the perfect example.

Well, CP and Billg,we will see which scenario plays out.I consider myself very fortunate that I had 23 days of snowpack here.It will be impossible to have snowpacks of multi MONTHS if this recent warming trend continues.

Pete yes I know but the graph is very cool showing the ebb and flow of our sensible weather.

From teh various readings and research from IIPPC scientist who have left this organization and one in particular who I have 2 of her books - we are in an interglacial period - funny cause the last time the earth about 2*C warmer than present from here findings and research - this place is so old we can't wrap our heads around it - again tens of millions of years ago. There will be periods from her knowledge over teh past 30 years researching climate that will be normal, below normal and above normal - sounds like I am trying to sell yuo a bridge. She posed teh question - as to what is our normal? 1800's was a hell of lot colder than now but 500 year previous it was warmer than now but again the instrumentation and readings were dinosauric to today's means. So what is normal? How do we know that the instrumentation placement for temperatures is not being skewed? There have been thousands of locations across America that were co-op stations that are no longer being manned or used. These are usually in rural areas.

The MJO/STRAT/AAM combo is going to allow for a great West Based Greenland block - I have been harping on 3 snow events for March - not delusional CP, I look at LR indicators and listen to really knowledgeable LR forecasters. Heck it may even snow in the HV,LHV the 1st week of April from what is being discussed.
