Welcome back Chief! Let's get geared up for what is hopefully a better winter season than last.

I see that Accuweather just released their long-range winter outlook and are calling for a stormy (snow and ice) winter in the northeast. Will be interesting to see what others have to say in the coming weeks.

Thank you!

No way! I don't live in Cranford any longer. I need to update my location. I'm in Morristown now.

Janet, not only does Halloween look cold, it looks wet too. Funny thing is we have a stream about 6 ft wide and six inches deep at it lowest yet this year despite any heavy rains, it has stayed thinner and shallower. It is running at the lowest I have seen it during the last 20 years. If we get about 50 inches of rain, and about the same in snow, the stream has been consistent in its running except during major storm/rain events. A friend in SJ said his stream dried up. Sometimes I think about how more water is pumped out than can be replenished by rain and snow, especially in underground aquifers in Kansas as an example, or in Cape May where dead trees are all over the place from salt water infiltration.

I stumbled upon a phone number that provides forecasts for the greater NYC area
631-924-0517. It's from Upton, out on the grounds of the Brookhaven Labs. Kind of old school in today's world of weather apps.

Greybeard, back in the early 60's, there was a phone service that charged 5 or 10 censt a call for the updated weather forecast. They changed it every 1/2 hour or so.When a snowstorm was headed for the tri-state area , I went into OCD Mode calling that number time after time. When my Dad got the phone bill, there was Hell to pay,LOL.Still remember it almost 60 years later .........

I remember it well doc. I think we reminisced about that some months back. I was going to mention it in my post, but only a handful of us on the forum are from that era. You, dkodgis and I are showing our age. Life seemed a lot simpler back in those days.

We had better weather forecasts 48 to 24 hours out but no reaaly good hurricane ones. Things have changed. In the good old days, we did not have as many bills and everything was work, hard work. Now eveything is (maybe) easier

Yeah it was kinda ironic, and it seems most of the towns I visit in Jersey are really nice, Jersey is not what you see right off the bridge or along the meadowlands area. Well stop being lazy and change your locale lol, what do you think a foot of snow in NYC on Nov 7th? Chances 0.001%?

in my senior year of h.s,i used to walk through a cemetery to catch the F train to get home,so that year Halloween came on a Thursday so i saw a small shovel on the ground picked it up and started tapping on the gravestones. My friends said "what are you doing that for"?..so i said I'm waking up the dead"...they thought i was weird..25 years later the addam's family was released and at the end of the movie the kids started doing the same thing.."Wake the dead,Wake the dead"......

From Joe D on WxBell
Notorious cold spot Peter Sinks, Utah, dipped to an incredible minus 45 degrees early Wednesday. This appeared to be the coldest October temperature on record anywhere in the Lower 48 states, according to Utah-based meteorologist Timothy Wright.

That is seriously cold.

And we have also seen many other all-time October lows in cities all across the western half of the country…

-Bozeman, Montana: minus 14 degrees (Oct. 29 and 30)

-Casper, Wyoming: minus 8 degrees (Oct. 29 and 30)

-Grand Junction, Colorado: 12 degrees (Oct. 30)

-Livingston, Montana: minus 12 degrees (Oct. 29)

-Rawlins, Wyoming: minus 20 degrees (Oct. 30)

-Rock Springs, Wyoming: minus 6 degrees (Oct. 30)

-Salt Lake City: 14 degrees (Oct. 30)

This is ridiculous type of cold for this time of year - and why is this happening?
The mesopshere is extreme cold and we have extremely low solar along with a modoki el nino and an anomalous warm blob in the NE Pacific by Alaska ala 13-14, 14-15 - do yuo remember those cold outbreaks we had?
We are seeing this cold very early and it will last as early as it started by teh looks of things atmospherically, and celestially with geomagnetism at a high, solar flux, protons, coronal holes just bombarding our planet.

This cold can get extreme for our area as well this incoming winter. This winter looks to last until late March again if not early April this year based upon analogs and whats going on over our heads!
