August 2024 Observations and Discussion

August off to a hot, steamy start as forecast. 92* right now with a dewpoint of 71*. Heat Index likely will top 100* later this afternoon.

99* degrees....disgusting!

93* here. Dewpoint 75*. Heading to 96. In a word: Gross.

85 degrees, minor T Storm just passed, cloudy , calm. The hot and humid summer continues.However, on a chore today saw a few splotches of color on a few trees and vines, have acorns dropping from the oak at the end of my driveway , and the days noticeably shorter now. Closer to the end than the beginning of this heat and humidity,

HOTTTTT, sitting in AC and not moving lol outside lol. No rain mainly sunny here and hope it can stay that way because I have outdoor plans both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Looks like Sun morning is more of a chance of rain than tomorrow morning but we will see. I think it is going to be a lot of hit or miss, nothing solid over a large area.

Yes, for sure. This is the time of year when the shorter days really start to pick up steam and become more apparent. Even though the days are technically getting shorter throughout July, it's too negligible to notice at first. Now you turn the calendar to August and suddenly you look outside and it starts getting dark at 8:30 (sunset tonight is at 8:11 and should be mostly dark by about 8:30), then 8:15 then 8:00 then . . . next thing you know it's September and the sunset is at 7:30. Fall is coming.

Well just had Lightning hit the top of the tree on my property, 30 minutes later and it is still smoking in the picture, pieces of bark are on my lawn 70 feet from the tree!
After hearing the strike and flash I don’t know how anyone survives getting hit by Lightning?

Heavy T Storm the last half hour here.Lightening, thunder, torrential rains.76 degrees.

Thank God, the lightning did not Hit your house. It was one crazy storm

currently 77* with 70% humidity...urgh...miserable

and did anyone else get their electric bill    

We have solar and our bills this time of year are 3/4 dollars...this month 117...eek..highest bill in years..even higher than when I have Christmas lights..and no sun months..ac is always going...
I saw my neighbor yesterday out by their meter looking at it and my friend had a bill over 500 never had one that high...but we have had almost 20 90* days and a rate increase..so I guess there are a lot of shocked people this month. 142 days until winter!!

1190ftalt...thank goodness not your house! can not imagine the sound of that...last storm we had a lightning strike a couple of miles from the house and it felt like it hit our yard...was so loud..

I lived in a dump NYC apartment until I was 6, no ac and you froze in the winter.My Mom would set up a cushion so I could sleep on the fire escape.Had no central air until age 16 in the Fort Lee NJ house.My dad put it in himself.Back then you would scratch up 50 or 75 cents to go to an all day movie( short with two features) with the sign "it's air conditioned inside" they left some doors open in front so you could get a blast of the cold air,LOL.No ac on buses and most cars then, you sat by an open window to get a breeze when it started moving.I bet half the people in this country today would die with no ac.A good old box fan can get you through it.

I live in a townhouse. I keep my thermostat at 75°F, but it is warmer upstairs because I have a cathedral ceiling with a loft, and heat rises. I have a ceiling fan in the loft, which helps (a little). My electric bill this month was $60.  That’s about 40% higher than my monthly budget plan payment, but it will all average out and definitely won’t break the bank.  

But yes, it’s been stupidly hot and humid.  I don’t have a weather station, but there is one in my neighborhood that reports to Wunderground.  According to that station’s data, we’ve had 9 days of 90°F or greater in June, 15 days in July, and 3 so far in August for a total of 27 days so far this year.

I used to spend most of my time outdoors in the summer, but not this year!  I can’t bear it. It’s the humidity that’s killing me. It can be 80°F with low humidity and I’m happy with no AC and just open windows.

That's nuts and even more nuts that I had a $215 conedbill for a small 2 bedroom.apartment! Yes we have 3 ac and usually run 2 at night but still to be half of a whole house? How can that be right.

Absolutely insane weather .we are in my closet..hanging out..Ruby is better in here under her blanket...lol I am straightening a drawer while waiting for the storm to pass .lol

Heard con Ed was raising prices as well...everyone being hit with high bills..acs have not stopped running all summer..
