Storm in Review- 02/13-02/14 Godzilla of 2014 Empty Storm in Review- 02/13-02/14 Godzilla of 2014

Post by Frank_Wx Fri Feb 14, 2014 9:12 am

Is there much more to say about this storm? It was not just the incredible snowfall rates of 2 to as much as 5 inches per hour, but we had a little bit of everything. Thunderstorms, sleet, freezing rain, etc... It was also a long duration event that came in two parts. The first part featured a heavy front end thump of snow for many as the storm came up the coast. The 2nd part was an upper level low hanging back that came swinging through Friday morning to bring unbelievable convective-type of snow to parts of the region, specifically northeast PA / NW NJ / HV.

Storm in Review- 02/13-02/14 Godzilla of 2014 February_14_verification_map

The snowfall map went as advertised (MD was under done). The areas expected to receive the heaviest snowfall did. Widespread 12+ inch snow amounts from DC to NYC truly made this storm as Godzilla as they come. One thing that was unexpected was the rain that fell in the evening hours last night around NYC Metro. Some areas picked up nearly .75 inches of heavy rainfall due to thunderstorms coming off the ocean. Imagine if that was snow? Madonne!

It will be interesting to see how the NWS categorizes this storm. We must not forget the southeast, who also saw heavy ice and snow accumulations and shut down cities for 2 whole days. It was an damaging storm up and down the entire eastern seaboard, with New England getting theirs today.

Jackpot:

Look at our interactive member map, SNOW MAN definitely took the jackpot home in this one. He most likely got 20+ inches of snow, perhaps 2 feet. Those bands in NEPA and NWNJ last night were insane.

I also want to take this time to welcome all the new members of the forum. We gained a lot of new faces throughout this storm and I hope they find this to be an enjoyable outlet to come and get accurate weather information and discuss it among awesome people. We also share the same passion! If you would like to be placed in the interactive members map, please comment in this thread your city / zip code and I will add you in!

Next system will be Saturday, where a minor snowfall event looks likely with potential for a moderate event if models trend stronger!

Have a good one Very Happy

Frank

All,
I just wanted to thank everyone for all their input and insight this week. Special thanks to Frank, CP, and NJ and all the others for all your efforts AND PATIENCE!!!!!! You guys rock, there is no need to ever watch TV forecast again! This week was amazing! Us weather geeks version of the Super Bowl and World Series rolled into one. Everyone continue to exercise caution with icing, pot holes, and i am sure what will become the next worry, flooding! Thanks guys!
