It is GFS = good north stream, EURO = good south stream, Im not too excited about this as the past couple low QPF events generally underperformed. If it trends much wetter and taps into ocean moisture its a different story but as of now Im not expecting much.

@sroc4 wrote:CMC is coming in wet!!  Agree with Mugs.  I am telling you that once we see where the boundary layer sets up, which isnt happening until after the front passes today, the true details of this system and wed system will show itself.  One thing that is not going to be modeled, I think, this far out is the thermal gradient between very cold air and very warm air.  Even a weak s/w that rides along this frontal boundary has a chance to become more amped due to this idea.

BINGO DOC JR (Scott) - we have to wait and the models struggle with the thermal gradient and have all winter long - I am taking a page from you Doc to be patient but the H5 map looks good to very good IMO.

well mugs all I know is we have 3 good chances of accumulating snow this week. sun night/tues morn and a bigger one Wednesday. I think by Thursday morn we will be in second place all time. Very Happy  by the way CP do we have to put an asterisk next to this years snowfall if we break the record? why? because it will be the first year we have an accurate snow total thanks to you. imagine if the zookeeper had taken accurate measurements in 95-96.lol

Algae

The 12 Z Nam was much wetter with this system. I know it's a little out of its timeframe but Sunday night and earlyMonday morning, there were some nice snowfall rates for 3 to 4 hours over New York City, Hudson Valley, Northern New Jersey and Long Island. A much different look than what the 12Z GFS was showing.

I love it algae, and you make a good point.  Laughing

Even if they just measured the January blizzard of 96 correctly it would be in the 80s.

The official, and I use that word very loosely, measurement was 20.2 inches in Central Park. Every surrounding reporting station was wellover that. LaGuardia, Newark all reported over 2 feet, as well as every other borough. The real record is probably somewhere between 80 and 85.

The record in any month is 36.9, which we set just four years ago. At 28.8 right now that's not impossible for February. We would need at least two decent events before next Friday though, Let's hope it happens. It would certainly give us a better shot in March to get the all-time record.

This is a very light and quick moving event. The snow may be so light it won't even accumulate on roadways. Plus surface temps are a little warm. This will arrive around midnight Sunday night. Will stop by 6am Monday morning

The blizzard of 96 was one of the greatest undercounts. Even the middle of my street had almost 2 ft, the sidewalks was more than that. I wish I had pics but that was before the camera phone, youtube, etc era. NYC schools were closed for a few consecutive days that doesn't happen easy.

I wonder if it seems more than what it was cuz prior to that I hardly remember big snowfalls in NYC as a kid, it feels like I grew up in a snowless era. lol

Blizzard of 96 was the best storm of my life. 48 hours before the storm, all the weather outlets said the storm was a "southern slider" and that the heavy snows would stay far to the south. I remember Janice Huff on channel 4 calling for flurries! on Saturday morning, the day before, they were calling for 3-6 inches. When the 12z model runs came in that's when the fun began. The 6pm news they upped the amount to 6-12. At 11pm they upped again to 12-18. Since there was no internet at the time, I just went to sleep giddy. Early sunday morning, I turned on the weather channel, yea I know, but like I said I had limited resources. A red scroll came across the bottom of the screen that the amounts were upped to 18-24inches. Snow started at 9am. By lunchtime the red scroll came back… 24-36 inches areawide. I was now in weenie heaven! At times the snow was falling at a rate of 3-4 inches per hour! Storm wrapped up on monday at 1pm. 28 hours of pure bliss. I was living in Bloomfield at the time; ended up with 29 inches, with drifts as high as 6 feet! I'd love to live through that again! Very Happy

The three snowiest months on record currently:

1) 36.9" February 2010
2) 36.0" January 2011
3) 30.5" March 1896

February 2014 currently has 28.8" of snow. If it gets at least 1.8" of snow by the end of the month, then the three snowiest months on record would all occur this decade.

Also, the 144 snow seasons entering this one had an average of ~28.4" with a standard deviation of ~14.8." If NYC gets at least 1.0" of snow the rest of the season, the 2013-14 season will be over two standard deviations above the mean.

00z GFS has between .1 - .2 qpf by Monday morning. Coatings to an inch or two looks likely, mainly on grassy surfaces (or should I say, already snow covered surfaces)

If you grew up in the 1980's you didn't imagine it, it was the most snowless, and is still the most snowless decades in 144 years of record keeping. The second most snowless decade was the 1970's. A rough 20 year period for a snow lover to grow up.

Well, all I remember from the 70's was the 78 storms in January and Feb which were 16 plus inches each.

The 80's I remember April '82-13inches, Feb.'83 21 inches and Jan 86 12 inches.

Ditto here Doc and the ice storms of 76-77. 1978 was a great winter as a kid snow on the ground and cold for 3 months. Went sleigh riding all winter long on my block!

Looks like NAM coming in dry. Would not be surprised over the next 24hrs or so if one or more models trys to increase QPF by a few tenths of an inch. Just enough to get us a bit excited (nothing crazy though). I also wouldnt be surprised to see it under perform when it finally comes to fruition as the last few minor events have. I believe Tom said something along those lines a few days ago. Anyway for now I agree with Frank...hard not to.

sroc 12z nam came in juicy .25-.5 qpf. I think its mostly snow since precip starts around 10pm.

The NAM has .15 to .35 QPF around the area. Surface temps are very warm starting around 38 around the area and most of the precip would not accumulate as its pretty light. About Coating to a inch area wide on the NAM.

This is not an exciting event for this time of year, we need dynamic cooling and a lot of precip to get significant accumulations on roadways and elsewhere, C-2" is my call as of now.

It looks like anywhere 30 miles north and west of NYC has a shot at 2-4 inch snows from this. Any areas south and east of that line will have temperature issues.

If there's any precip, that is still in question. GFS is weak with precip all around and shows almost nothing NW of the city. This will be a minor event at best, at worst nothing.

That's the key. How much precip makes it over the convection killing mountains since its a weak disturbance.

Actually, may need to change the name of this to possible rain wave, checked the NAM and here is the CMC, surface temps are horrid, will check the GFS in a bit.
