The Andrea Gail was also trying to go to the Flemishcap which is way the heck out there. How close are these gusts to any land mass?

Read in Mugsy's article an Aleutian Island registered 96 MPH.

Yes, great movie. Those guys all died on account of money, trying to rush back because the fish would spoil due to a lousy ice making machine breaking down! No amount of money they could pay me to be on those boats up in Alaska now!

Fame a glory in a blaze of glory - for what - life is not worth any amount - this is what pisses me off personally when people give the attitude of what it was cool or what's the big deal.

Scott, I give you a ton of credit for working on a boat - a family friend's brother worked on a clammer out of Cape May and lost his life is a storm back in the late 70's overloaded the boat to one side and the sucker rolled in heavy seas - nothing like this! Cappy was a drunk besides. They are with 50 foot swells at min and 100+mph winds - all for the sake of glory - stupidity is what it is.

I think also, Mugsy, it comes down to the money.A buddy of mine chartered a boat from Atlantic Highlands for striper fishing for friends and customers of his business.I read that AM of 25 to 30 MPH gusts and went to the dock wearing my waders.Everybody made fun of me.When we got out there, it was so bad, 10 to 12 foot seas, that everybody was soaked up to there knees and puking their guts out. They weren't laughing at my waders then! Bottom line, the trip should have been cancelled but Cappy wanted the dough.

Lot's of fishing boats down in Jersey seas through the years with guys losing their lives. Doc did have guts going out there and he knows and respects the sea.Nothing to be fooled with for sure!

Your article mentioned some of the crab boats are hightailing it back to shore.

I did that too Mugsy. I was on a Commercial skimmer clamming boat Jan-Feb winter 2004. If you recall we had some exceptionally cold days. I remember my thermometer reading -3* on multiple occasions that winter and we would frequently have to chip through 3-4" of ice in the mornings to get the boat off the dock. I particularly remember a front moving through one afternoon and a stiff NW kicked up while we were headed home with 35,000 lbs of clams aboard stacked in 100 lb individual bushels. We were taking rollers on an 45 degree angle, not quite broad side, to the starboard side of the boat. Needless to say we almost rolled a bunch of times which triggered my Captain to literally have me start tossing full bushels right over the side so we weren't so top heavy.  To add to the fun the spray was freezing on contact adding to our top heavy ness, so we would have to chip off hunks of ice just like you saw on the deadliest catch. We were on a 44' boat in the LI sound.  Here are a couple of images. Ahh the good ol days. Me on the left in the first pic and right in the second.

Here are some pics from the snow we got at Lyndon State this past Friday Night. Down here at 1,00ft we got a coating but at around 2,000-3,000ft they got about 2-3in as you can see in the snow covered mountains such as Burke Mtn.

It's going great. I love it here. Professors are great, school is friendly, and the education I am getting is top notch. Great school for the Atmospheric Sciences field, especially in the broadcast sector! And yea, I can't believe the 1st semester is almost over! It went so quickly! But luckily, I have no complaints!

After a high of 53.4 today already below freezing at 31.6. I love this time of year for that. Suns weak lots of night for radiational cooling and even after a mild day it will drop into 20's tonight. Will enjoy the next three above normal days and then bring on the deep freeze and hopefully some snow afterward. Trees are pretty much bare now so bring it on.

Typical heat island effect. It's the biggest reason it's so hard for NYC to get sub zero in winter. Anytime you see a map showing that for NYC like last years Euro calling for -12 at one time, throw it out the models don't factor the heat island effect at all.

Got to 28.6 here which seems  pretty uniform around the area. Only the fourth freeze of the season which is way behind schedule. I haven't seen the grass growing this late in the year in a long time. Hopefully that ends this week.
