Yes, 60 inches in two weeks is definitely an anomaly.

That Feb 2010 bizarro snowstorm that gave the HV 36 inches and Boston rain should be mentioned as well.

Yeah, annoying accents. Sold a few old car parts to a guy in Boston on CL and when we talked I thought his name was Mack.I was calling him that. When I filled out the UPS shipment slip, I found out his name was MARK. WTF??   LOL!

lol! Classic story Doc lol!

Yeah, CP a real Capo de Chooch put my foot in my mouth realization. But, hey, those crazy accents. And the guy was Italian also.Just another bizarre episode.

On my bucket list, Taffy, a visit to Fenway. Just incredibly classic baseball history there.

A few times they forecasted single digits in the past few weeks .Never happened.I think single digits is likely but you need good radiational cooling for that .No? If any clouds come in that's it.

It depends on where you live....I am in NENJ and have been in the single digits a few times recently. I think even NYC hit 8° this week....but I am at 28° and falling now, we'll see how low we get...

@CPcantmeasuresnow wrote:Let's put a little perspective on the Boston thing because I see a lot being posted about it here. First of all I hate the bastards but that's because of a Yankees, Knicks, Ranger thing not because of snowfall envy. Actually most places in the Hudson Valley from Orange County and Putnam County on North average more snow per season than the city of Boston does, as does far northwest New Jersey and parts of Northeast Pennsylvania.

The city of Boston averages 42 inches of snowfall in a season, New York City averages 26 inches per season that's going by the 30 year average for both cities. Last season Boston had 58.9 inches of snow and New York City saw 57.4 inches of snow, a negligible difference. Also put into perspective that the guy that measures in New York City doesn't count 10 to 20% of the snow that falls.

Boston has had 54 inches of snow so far this season, many in our area have had 35 to 45 inches of snow already this season, the difference isn't as big as you think.

The big difference of course is Boston has had 85% of that in the last two weeks. What's been going on in Boston is very rare for them, and really very rare for anyone. They have been in the bull's-eye the last two weeks and making us all jealous, but it's not the norm as a matter of fact it's unprecedented in their history.

In 125 years of record-keeping the city of Boston has had 60 or more inches of snow in a full season only 10 times. They may do that do now in a two-week period. For those of you in a rush to move up there it probably won't happen again for another 125 years and you'll be dead before ever seeing it again. Plus you'll have to listen to those annoying accents. Stay put it's not worth the move.

This was awesome

NYC has already been in single digits twice this season. They also got down to 4 last season, it's not rare at all. More seasons than not they see single digits at some point.

O or below in NYC is another story. In 2004 they reached 1 on two separate occasions. The last sub zero n NYC was January 1994 of -2.

I know it's not rare. But if forecasts verified it would be even more.National weather service had one night last week forecasted for 6 then upped it 8 degrees the next day to 14.

I disagree about the wind part Abba. In areas outside the city of course clear skies and calm winds with a good snow pack is the ideal for radiational cooling. In NYC with the heat Island effect calm nights are not the ideal for their low temperatures. To offset the effects of the heat island you need a good stiff breeze. Their coldest nights are usually the first night of the passage of an arctic front where winds are higher as the cold air invades, and effects of the heat island are somewhat nullified by the winds which doesn't let the heat that is absorbed by the roads, buildings, and pavement to settle in.
