Roads are very bad on Long Island.
Husband is trying to get to Suffolk from Queens and just called to say the LIE and Jericho Turnpike are both closed.

It means very rapidly rising air which leads to heavy rain fall rates and the possibility for thunder.

Re: Sunday, January 18th Rain Storm
I just drove into Queens from Nassau on the LIE. Only wet now. No problems. I'm REALLY REALLY concerned about flooding for later and possibly water coming into my basement. It's only raining lightly and theres ponding everywhere. The ground is so frozen the water has no place to go. From the looks of that radar I'm going to be spending a lot of time out in the backyard in my fishing waders.

james I agree my ground is frozen solid and ponding has already started and rainfall is only going to get heavier. def big flooding concerns for later today.syosnow94 wrote:I just drove into Queens from Nassau on the LIE. Would rather skip the FR and just plain rain for this.
27 degrees and moderate freezing rain right now. Driveways and roads are like an ice skating rink. Better keep that day job Doc. Oh I forget your retired. You lucky bastard.

Re: Sunday, January 18th Rain Storm
nws blew this big time most places from cnj north and west away from imm coast will have between .1 and .25" of ice. noticed the winds are still out of the north for most of metro nyc. winds from the south along s and c nj coast where temps are in the upper 40's.
edited nws maps always update from previous maps. do not know why that happens. map should read no ice acc. for most of area as of 10:30 am

Re: Sunday, January 18th Rain Storm
Icy, icy here in Circleville NY near tip of Orange County. Fire alarms going off all over the place. Paper says I-95, 287, Palisades, Thruway, etc. essentially shut down (lohud.com) and FaceBook folks say it is all bad everywhere including Route 17. From what I can see and read, this ice thing is for real in a very big way and anyone out this morning got screwed and tattooed. It is enough to keep people home lest they be killed on the roads. It's 10:45 am and all this has unfolded already and the heavy rain hasn't even hit here yet...just icy, light drizzle.

I spun out in Ramsey this morning, a ton of accidents around here. Rain has been falling steady and is starting to pond on the frozen ground.

That's all it takes.
30.4 now and everything still frozen, although it's up substantially from 25 at 8Am.

Re: Sunday, January 18th Rain Storm
0ver 400 accidents reported in nj alone with some fatalities. whoever took down the fzr advisory at the nws for the 4am update should face serious consequences. I mean did they look at observation and they had to know ground was frozen solid. they can't always go by guidance alone. I would love to be in there when they are deciding how to put out a forecast and see there process. obviously it is flawed. rain and 33*.ugh. best way to describe outside my house is that it looks similar to when we get an inch of snow followed by a few hours of rain. very slushy.

Any chance roads will clear later? How about the AM commute tomorrow? Looking at Passaic and Morris counties which are both a total mess now.

Really impressive moisture fetch with this system and a Impressive radar presentation. It should exit the whole area by midnight tonight.
