Not sure what year

Excellent post and good reminder.

I'm thinking those -50 wind chills were from the late 70's. It's gonna be cold but nothing we haven't seen before. They way some people act on TV you'd think the world were coming to an end.

Thst was a terrible report lol the way he talked had me cracking up. Those temps and possible winds enough to possibly take down some wires not good. I hope we get snow to make it at least a bit fun.

I'm thinking we do get something sat. It's just a question of how much and where those ratios hit. How do u figure the ratios frank like u had said earlier 30 or 40 to 1. Is there a way that u came to that conclusion? Yes I know Alex point but how do u figure ratios?
Will cas even turn over in temps like thAt? Or us it best not to run the car?

1. Density of the snow (wet bulb)
2. Rate of the falling snow (700mb Vertical Velocity)
3. Surface temps
4. 925, 850, 300 mb temps

Maybe Alex has other criteria but those are pretty important.

@amugs wrote:Lee said winds will be howling gusts of 40-50 mph for the NYC metro area Sunday - wind chills -20 below as you said Jman plus and up to -40 below in burbs and rural outlying areas. Been saying since last week in long range and the folks do not know what is going to hit them this weekend.

Also said the cold and stormy pattern is with us at least for another week and a half and possibly until the end of the month. that is a good sign in itself - said we have to watch Saturday even for the NYC metro area if this coastal jogs north.

FWIW, innaccuwx has 60mph gusts on sunday! Doubt it verifies but as the LP pulls away the isobars on most models do get real tight so its not impossible. Wind seems to come down easier during the winter than the summer or fall when it needs convection, is there a reason why its always so windy in winter and does not seem to have issues coming to surface?

John, winds during the winter are driven to the surface at a fluid rate. North westerly winds from strong mid-level trough's usually have tight pressure gradients. In the summer, we get into those south westerly flows and the only thing we get out of that is a humid air mass. T-storms are when we see our highest winds, or if the Bermuda High tries to extend west while a cold front is approaching from our west.

Can someone please explain the panic over the cold and wind chills to me. PLEASE!! Stay inside! If you must go out wear many layers! Keep indoor pipes on and exposed to heat. That's it. It's 2015. Everybody jump off the panic train it's a little embarrassing.

Uhm, nobody is panicking? We're most just impressed. Would you like to do the research on when the last time winds chills were that low in NYC? I get the impression you're not very happy about some of the content posted on this forum. If you don't like to read something you feel the need to tell everyone about it.

Not panicking, It is tiotally amazing and crazy! I will be in multiple layers snow goggles and out measuring the winds on sunday and enjoying every second of it. I have been on the top of stowe mountain with -50 degree windchills and out all day so I know how it is. Although I will say I am slightly worried about my heat going out as it did twice this past weekend, that would not be fun and with a 21 month old yes I worry but no its not mass hystery...and YOU GO FRANK! And thanks for explanation for the winds, so is it safer to say we can take winds more seriously to some extent in the winter?

The rattlesnake incident was starting to get some national attention. Here's what NBC Dallas reported...

Rattlesnake Causes North Central Texas Radar Outage

The National Weather Service says a North Central Texas radar site is offline, and a rattlesnake is to blame.

The NWS put out a message saying "due to complications involving a rattlesnake" the site in Granger will be down overnight Tuesday and possibly into Wednesday afternoon.

The NWS tells NBC 5 a technician went to the site Tuesday to upgrade software and when he opened a cabinet containing some computer equipment he discovered a rattlesnake. The technician quickly left the building.

The NWS says animal control will remove and relocate the snake Wednesday.

CMC out to 240, awesome if it verified and that's not including the ratios from this weekend. I do not hold a lot of stock in the cmc though.
