Near Atlantic City, we used to put out pansies in the first week of January. It was nice seeing flowering plants in January. Daffodils are starting to peek up through the ground there and some Crocus will come out in about two weeks. Here, I love the change of seasons and the winter but I guess the good old days are getting fewer and fewer when it comes to snow. At least the stream picked up from a mud bed to about 30 feet wide and a foot deep. It has been so dry. Not a good winter for the water table.

Re: Wx Banter Thread 2.0
It's funny the little things you notice in winter when there's no snow. Last winter, I marveled at how some of the leaves stayed on the tree in front of my house all the way through until spring. Going back a few years, there were spring flowers budding in Jan. and Feb. Now I look at the data that says this area averages somewhere between 40 and 55" of snow depending on which database I check and I can't remember the last winter that brought that much snow.

You are in a tough area there, too south or east to benefit from most of the lake effect areas in New York State most of which average between 100-200 inches of a snow a year and two far inland to benefit from most noreasters. The pattern the last 5 years has also been very bad from western and central Pa the areas you're climate is closer to.
Consider Jamestown NY to your west averages 98 inches of snow per year and Binghamton to your east averages 84 inches per year and there you are stuck in the middle averaging 50. If it was me I'd move 50 miles east or west. JK

I guess my Daffodils are just earlier than most. They've been poking out for weeks and they're 3-4" out of the ground. Same thing happened last year, and the late freezes meant fewer flowers. I saved a bunch of pine boughs from Christmas to cover them in a big storm. I hope they get used.

I live in the snow void, the hole of the snownut so to speak. I grew up in Herkimer, (not too far from Utica so as to give you a vague idea of where that is) NY which averages over 100"/year. As far as moving goes, if I ever move it will be to someplace like rural Maine where I can be fairly isolated and still get a lot of snow.

Seriously. Anything that is 35*-45* is miserable. To warm to snow...to cold to do anything outside. What is the point? Just break the pattern and make it 60+ degrees under strong high pressure that way we can get outside and enjoy it...syosnow94 wrote:Quietace wrote:I love winter. Meltdowns all over the weather world today especially on the East Coast. Really can't complain for area most of us are near normal or above normal snowfall at this point. Yes January sucked and it's been warm for too long. But the pattern has changed and is still changing so we have a great shot and ending up normal to slightly above this winter I mean we can expect one hundred and fifty percent of snowfall every year or can we

I don't think anyone is above normal in snowfall. And many people are below normal.

Al it's not just the snowfall, we've been 6 to 8 degrees above normal area wide since mid December. Snowfall around our area I would say for the most part is slightly to below normal so far area wide. Some spots are near normal, I'm at 27.1 which is near normal for the end of January, but when it's this freakin warm who gets to enjoy it? We're lucky in most of the HV that the sleet storm from a week ago has kept us in a mantle of white for the last 9 days but other than this period there have been very few that it's looked like winter.
Speaking of sleet we should order up a 4 inch sleet storm for everyone at the beginning of December. This stuff laughs at the sun.

I can concur. At least my backyard is above normal; although many locations on LI are not because some of the systems that affected LI we had convective banding that did not affect the entire area. Normal snowfall for me is about 28" so I am def ahead of schedule at 21.95" with historically the biggest snowfall month to go. One modest event will get me above normal and thats do-able. I personally weight snowfall more heavily than temps. If I end up with above normal snowfall in an otherwise crappy winter that is a win for me no questions asked. I will never give a grade less than a C- for that. Last winter was the perfect example. That is as bad a winter overall as it gets yet IMBY I had above normal snowfall and a nice blizzard. That would make this winter no less than a C if I end up above normal because overall the temps were much better than last year. It wont get much worse than last year, at least we hope.

Definitely Al. Could probably start with three of the four years Ended the 1990's. For me this year already surpasses last winter which was one of my top three worst of all time.

I saw it, but frankly with the past two winters affecting people on here the way that they have, nothing struck me as odd about it at all. lol

Finally got a CocoRaHS gauge at home(Needed to find money in the budget its $39.75 with shipping). Have been taking the ones here at school for a year or so. Also finally going to a skywarn class in April to get that done after a numerous amount of years wanting to.
