Re: January 2019 Observations and Discussions
got up to 48 in Binghamton. Lost about the entire snowpack. Have 2" in spots, grass in others. Ended as snow so now we have a slushy coating of about 3/4". Temp down to 31

Re: January 2019 Observations and Discussions
Got up 55 today with very impressive rains. Now ponds of water where snow should be.
As the last batch of moisture leaves the cold air pours in to add a little salt to the gaping wound.

Cold returns this weekend and we have a storm or 2 to track next week. Slowly getting back into a winter mood

What a crappy day. Snow pack took a major hit. High of 55, heavy rain, fog, and plenty of flooding caused by the rain and melting snow. Down to 36 now. Hoping for a few inches of snow late Monday/Tuesday.

Re: January 2019 Observations and Discussions
It has not been that long right? Looks like we have a few threats coming up of well below freezing overnight temps with calm, clear, and BN 850's both this weekend and with the next surge of arctic air in the middle of next week. However, I will be at NCAR during this period where it may be warmer than TLH at times....disappointing.Frank_Wx wrote:Quietace wrote:Had a high of 70 F at midnight. Chilly now, 43 F.

I had 1.8 inches here and now it is 31. The winds are howling. Only 19 mph but for some reason, they have gravitas.

Re: January 2019 Observations and Discussions
Mom bst of luck. Being a teacher of 27 years from woodshop to high level engineering, don't waste your money on a private school education unless there are other factors involved ie -scholarship, poor public school education or environment. Everything happens for a reason and there is wayyyyyy to much pressure put into hs today. They have literally taken college acadics and brought it down to HD and have the domino affect all the way through. Best of luck and he will do fine.

Thank you! We are done!! notice I said we..lol .I am happy it is over and that he can just relax without the extra work he has been putting in...lol. NO we will not pay for private HS.(we have friends that have 2 children and they will pay about 150,000 for HS..that is insane!!) and yes there is a lot of pressure on kids today. He handle 3 honors classes and a high school level math class, and extra curricular activities, but manages without stress. I want him to still be a kid it goes way to fast and then real responsibility begins. It is going to be what it is going to be...I tell him if you take Ave A or Ave B to get to where you want to end up it does not matter....just don't be lazy!! cause that drives a momma crazy!! Have a great weekend and hope we have some snow and cold next week!! Weather wise turning out to be a great day.. 34* winds at 2mph and it is SUNNY!amugs wrote:Mom bst of luck. Mom best of luck on your son, he sounds like a fine young Man!
Mugsy, you brought back a great memory from 1964 when I was in "Industrial Arts" class.I was 14 and my 'shop' teacher Mr Jenning's project was to make a lamp using a wood lathe, bending metal, drilling counter sunk holes in the metal and wiring up the socket and installing it.I still have that lamp today ans use it in my basement shop.Do they even have Industrial Arts anymore? Even though I was in the Academic program, I loved that 'shop' class,LOL.

Oh yes and don't allow guidance counselors and other's to pressure that he needs 4 years of language fr college BS it is just that, he will do fine if he applies himself and is personable, lacking in the youth and adults today! I told my youngest son who is a senior to have fun his senior year and he took stats instead of per calculator and video graph and guess what, he got into 3 out of his top 4 colleges and he is happy. Kids need to be kids.weatherwatchermom wrote:Thank you! We are done!! notice I said we..lol .I am happy it is over and that he can just relax without the extra work he has been putting in...lol. @Doc yes we still have IA classes but they are called Applies Arts or Applied Technologies and I teach my students woodworking machinery for project development and construction in my.....Honors Engineering get classes. And guess what?? The kids LOVE it and they love hands on. Hell I love it and love the hands on to along with them. It's fun! We still have drafting class and elegant tonics but to a different degree and not tsquares and trI angles though we do revert to that at times if need be. But more so CAD =computer aided drafting, but they have to hand damraft first to understand all of these concepts make them better learners and problem solvers.
Ta ta for now peeps.

Re: January 2019 Observations and Discussions
Very cold temps for a few days, but once again it seems to be followed by a warm up and i'm sure that 4 letter word beginning with "R" will visit again. My only hope is that the blocking that the models keep showing (even though it gets pushed back or doesn't materialize) will FINALLY occur, but as I see it, the first week or so of February doesn't seem too promising at the moment. Hope it changes!Frank_Wx wrote:Temps Wednesday 8pm

20* and Clear. With cold temps tonight and cloud cover tomorrow I could see daytime temps not warming as much as forecast. That might get an early jump in any (limited) accumulation late tomorrow afternoon/evening.

I was thinking the same thing. It's currently 18.9° and falling.
