Lots of fun and so nice to meet everyone. Where else could I go and have a conversation about “what was your favorite snowstorm?”Frank_Wx wrote:What a fun day! Great to meet Chris (chief) and Joyce (brownie) for the first time. Also good to see Janet, Mikey and Bill again. After about 2 hours a bar crawl came in and it got really loud haha
We drank away our sorrows. Hopefully better luck next year. We may look to do another get together this summer.

Twister!
Earthquake (Charlton Heston and George Kennedy, 2 of the great overacts)
Somehow, you gotta include the Towering Inferno. I mean its Paul Newman, who was just pain cool.

Assignment complete. Spent a relaxing Sunday afternoon watching Volcano. Very good movie and as usual nobody plays a better character taking charge of an emergency/critical operation than Tommy Lee Jones. (Not sure you could perfectly detonate a 20-story building in 20 minutes just happening I guess to have the necessary explosives/charges at the ready, but hey, it’s Hollywood).
Frankly I’m not sure how I missed a Tommy Lee Jones disaster movie with Randy Newman’s I Love LA in the closing credits for all these years, but it’s been rectified.

People under 60 have an excellent chance of recovering from this.If you want a real pandemic, most people on this site would not remember the Polio Pandemic of the early 1950's where 250,000 cases were reported nationwide in 1952.You wound up dead or in an iron lung.I lived through that from 1950 to 1955 when , thankfully, Dr Jonas Salk developed a vaccine for it.Hopefully, a vaccine will come out soon for this Coronavirus and the fear and panic will subside.I agree with frank638, at this point of the pandemic, all measures should be taken to reduce the chances of this thing from growing and spreading.Thankfully, the epidemic appears to have peaked in China and South Korea. That was roughly 3 months from discovering it and to when measures were taken to stop the spread.
If you are elderly like me ( almost 70), or have elderly loved ones, stay inside as much as possible. That's what I am doing, hunkering down until this thing breaks.I read they recommend changing your clothes in the garage before you enter the house. Also, disinfect your steering wheel when you get home after you have been outside.
God Bless all and we will get through this thing.

Re: Banter Thread 5.0
Well good riddance to this winter and may another like it not return for many a year.
Who knows what next season brings, but I don't expect good DJF months. That is until i see a better and more sustainable arctic and pacific manifest itself during meteorological winter, I'll err on the side of caution.
As Doc and others have noted many times before sometimes these patterns are tough to break even year over year. However, chances next year matches this year are definitely quite low, so there's that.
Anyway, stay well all!

Re: Banter Thread 5.0
Hello to all my weather people! I hope you're all safe and feeling okay. I'm wishing everyone strength and good health.
I need input on temps for the next few weeks. I'm working on a Victory vegetable garden like they did back in world war II. It's a 4' x 8' plot that was my compost pile, but I've moved the uncomposted material and I'm putting in seeds to the great soil beneath. I know it's too early to plant but I'm putting in the seeds today or the next few days. I will cover it with plastic sheeting when temps are in the 30s overnight. But what I'm watching out for is a deep freeze that might undo my plans. I'd appreciate any thoughts on the potential of a deep freeze from this point forward. I see a few 30 degree temps in the next 10 days, and I can live with that. But anything below 30 would be bad. TIA

Re: Banter Thread 5.0
Hi all, I know I haven’t posted in a while but I thought I would just give an update on stuff:
First off, I had a good time at the Morristown meetup. It was great to see you all. I know that being in Albany, I have seen more snow this season than a lot of you. Though honestly, aside from the 22” snowstorm in early December, it hasn’t really been eventful. Up here, this winter is being regarded as a one hit wonder. But yea, I can totally understand the feelings of a very uneventful winter downstate to say the least. Also, as Frank mentioned, I did see the movie “Volcano”. I was a kid when I saw it and stumbled upon it when it was on the TV in the family house. The images of the lava in LA in the film drew me into it. Later, I would watch the movie in it’s entirety. As weird as a movie as it is, Tommy Lee Jones did a brilliant job acting. And in keeping with what an earlier post said, I also saw the movie “Outbreak” when I was a kid. In 7th grade, we were learning about viruses and my teacher showed us the film to cap off the lecture (though since it’s rated “R”, we had to get parent’s permission first, which it turns out wasn’t a problem).
That I think is a good segue-way to talk about the current outbreak affecting the globe. As much as it sucks that there will be no sports on until further notice, you have to keep in mind that in some parts of the world, like Italy, the situation has become so dire. I know Frank mentioned that his folks are in Southern Italy, which as of last week was not the epicenter of the outbreak. But the situation in northern Italy from what I heard is absolutely crippling. There are more patients in need than there are rooms available in hospitals, which has prompted them to decide who to bring in and who to be left to die. From what I have heard, some of these hospitals have now made it a policy not to take in anyone over the age of 80, which is devastating!
We in the US are on track to have the numbers similar to Italy within a week or so. Some of the policies we are seeing local, state, and federal officials, as crazy as they may seem, are an attempt to slow the rate of serious infections. The last thing we want to see is our hospitals become so saturated to where they become like in parts of Italy.
I will add that I think these measures will be in place for weeks, maybe months. We are dealing with a disease unlike anything any one of us have seen. I don’t think a lot of people are old enough to remember the Spanish flu pandemic from 1918-20 but I’m sure they encountered similar problems. It wouldn’t even shock me if when all is said and done, there is somebody each of knows personally who died in this pandemic. It’s unfortunate that unlike in the movie “Outbreak”, Dustin Hoffman and Morgan Freeman will not be able to save the day.
Sorry this got intense but I thought I would get it out there.

Good thing we went to Morristown when we did, because as of today, all restaurants there will be takeout and delivery only! I expect they will close entirely very soon.
I am trying not to think about how long all of this will last, because as someone who lives alone, I don’t want to think about the possibility of no human contact for months. Thankfully I have my cats! I start “remote teaching” from home today as my school is closed for at least the next two weeks.
Stay well, everyone!

We are very fortunate to be in our cocoon at home...husband working and child at his computer doing school work..he loves being home schooled so far..and we are bending rules to allow him to play on his games during the afternoons to have that social contact with his friends. A little nippy today, but I think a walk around the block will do us and the dogs good..as long as no one is around..
