We're only looking at less than a 1/4 inch of precip tomorrow so I doubt a 'flash freeze' that would result in major issues in the cards. Rain should end well before the temp falls below freezing.

UPTON:
THERE IS THE POTENTIAL A FLASH FREEZE MONDAY EVENING AS ANY
STANDING WATER FROM RAIN AND MELTING SNOW IS LIKELY TO FREEZE
FAIRLY QUICKLY AS TEMPS FALL INTO THE 20S OVER FAR NW ZONES.
ELSEWHERE...THERE MAY BE ENOUGH TIME TO DRY OUT BEFORE TEMPS CRASH
INTO THE SINGLE DIGITS TO MID TEENS BY DAYBREAK TUESDAY...BUT EVEN
WET ROADS WILL FREEZE UP DURING THE OVERNIGHT.

Re: Severe Arctic Blast / Flash Freeze 1/6-1/7
The cold will rival the 1994 cold outbreak but not over take it.
How crazy the all upper midwest cities (Chicago, Minneaplois, ST. Paul) and towns have cancelled school for Monday due to the severe cold and wind chills - we may and I say may have a delayed opening for some areas with the wind chills. I think the officials will take notice as the cold grips us tomorrow.
Jeff Smith said that the water on roads will freeze in about 30 minutes with this set up so let's hope it dries out before old man winter kicks in the door!!

Maybe for the midwest but it won't come anywhere close to the 1994 outbreak for lows in our area. IMO.
During the 94 outbreak - NYC was -2, Poughkeepsie was -21, Sussex NJ -32, Where I live in Highland Mills was -23.
I don't think we will come within 10 degrees of those temperatures.

Wow I remember it being cold but that cold momma mia - we need that PV to sit right on top of us for that extreme cold - now that you post this I recollect my buddy at work who lived in Warwick at the time had a reading of -24 and inside his garage it was -5!!
Coldest since that timeframe -1994??

Re: Severe Arctic Blast / Flash Freeze 1/6-1/7
Please exercise extreme caution Mon PM, Tues AM and PM and Wed AM. Surfaces everywhere are saturated from the melting snow and I would fully expect there to be a flash freeze this afternoon when the polar vortex sweeps in to our region. Even the floors inside subway stations I used this morning were soaking wet between the warm temps, melting snow and fog. Will have to be very careful heading home even this evening, and have not decided yet whether to try to make it out again Tues AM. Have seen a number of people over the years slip on ice and wind up with broken bones. I actually ordered ice cleats (not exactly a fashion statement, but better than winding up in a cast) but they won't make it to me until Friday : ( Please be careful everyone!

Post low temperatures and Temp changes January 6th-8th
I for one don't think we will reach the lows we did on the 4th but because I like to see records broken I'm hoping we do.
My temperature has already started to drop, I started the day at a ridiculous 53 after a morning low yesterday of 2.7 above and the morning before of minus 7.2.
A 50 degree swing up in 24 hours, goodbye snowpack, again.
I'm down to 43.3 now and not looking forward to driving home from Scarsdale (westchester county) tonight. Be safe everyone it's gonna be ugly tonight.

Yes in 1994 I remember a couple of them and I believe we had one in 1996 as well if memory serves me correct.

Re: Severe Arctic Blast / Flash Freeze 1/6-1/7
Upton's AFD mentions the possibility of issuing a Winter Winter Advisory if the flash freeze potential becomes widespread enough... Well Hello Upton???
Short term /6 PM this evening through 6 PM Tuesday/...
surge of Arctic air will arrive this evening as a strong middle level
shortwave passes through...and could be accompanied by a brief
snow shower mainly well inland. When this surge arrives...temperatures
will plummet into the single digits by morning and near 0 in the
higher elevations well north/west of NYC...with west winds gusting as
high as 45-50 miles per hour in NYC metropolitan and Long Island...possibly in the
interior higher elevations...and 40-45 miles per hour elsewhere. Temperatures will
struggle to rise above 10 above in NYC metropolitan and coastal
sections...and should remain in the single digits inland. This in
combination with west winds 25-35 miles per hour will produce dangerous wind
chills of 15-20 below north/west of NYC...and as low as 15 below
in NYC...western Long Island and southwest CT. Wind Chill Advisory has
been issued.
There is the potential for a flash freeze tonight as any standing
water from rain and melting snow refreezes...and the situation may
be handled via a Winter Weather Advisory if the threat looks to be
widespread.
