hey in LA and just catching up on everything back in ny. rain has been slow to move in to nyc area, nws has lowered storm totals by over an inch and 00z nam has come in with less than an inch for nnj and nyc metro. this storm, as have many this summer, looks to be an under achiever for our area. ciao for now

Wow there will be some records broken! This is a insane amount of rain, looking could hit near the 10 inch mark down there! NUTS!  Just started raining lightly here, I wonder how this will evolve north or if it will miss like algae said.  svr t-storm warning down there too with a mention of possible tornado rotation. Starting to see the rotation of the low within the heaviest rain in south jersey, low is starting to form up more.

Roads are flooded on LI all over the place. Some estimates of between 5 and 7 inches feel over parts of LI. If anyone can pull up the cam of the southern state parkway at deer park ave, you will see about 100 cars facing all different directions and about 20 cars flooded up to their windows. Crazy storm.

A bust for models last night. Had trouble with the convection again. Some impressive totals for SE NJ into LI.
Had about 5+ inches myself.

Coastal and southern NJ into central LI were the jackpot areas. Not sure if any models saw that coming.

wow over 13" of rain in Islip, including over 5" in one hour and nearly 10" in 2 hours. Lots of other double digit amounts across LI,
Going to go down as one of the greatest rain events ever for LI.

I'm from Wading River, about a 1/4 mile from the Sound, and I have never seen flooding like this since in my 30 years on the island. We received about 6-7 inches of rain in a very short period of time. My entire street was flooded out (the end of the street is a main floodwater drain which flows out into the Sound, but was completely full and backwashing up the street), and most roads exiting the town were completely impassable due to flooding and runoff from nearby farmlands. My cross street experienced a partial road collapse while two cars were driving through a large rain puddle. Neighbors were experiencing 4-5 feet of water in their basements. No power losses, thankfully, but likely significant devastation to local farmers/farm in the area.

Best,
Amanda

Good lord, yeah Frank although wasn't in my backyard I had a feeling major rain totals would be confirmed. Not 13 inches though! Guess we both missed this one, 4 inches locally more ya think lol, not funny though, I hope everyone in LI is ok. Southern CT got close to 5 or 6 inches I hear quite a bit of not so severe flooding there. Looks to be coming to a end but looks like MA is next in line for these insane totals.

Amanda,

Thanks for the update. I've never seen something like this before to be quite honest. That is so much rain in a short period of time. Not even Sandy or Irene brought with them that much rain. Glad you have power. Stay safe!

I was looking over model re runs this morning and to me it looks like the rain struggled to get north and west of I-95. This is probably due to the fact there was an upper level low north of the area acting as a block. So the rain just stayed on a diagonal from coastal Nj to central LI.

If I wasn't working I probably would have noticed it to alert you all.

It's actually a state record:

From Newsday:
"Between midnight Tuesday and 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, 13.27 inches of rain had fallen at MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma, the weather service said.
According to a preliminary report from the weather service, that rainfall breaks the New York State record for precipitation in a 24-hour period; the previous mark of 11.6 inches was Aug. 27-28, 2011, in Tannersville during what the service referred to as Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene."

Crazy stuff. Where I live in Aquebogue, we barely got 1.5". The cutoff seemed to be Rt 112 this summer for decent rainfalls. Don't feel a bit cheated though.
