Re: Observations/ Final Discussion Thread 1/2 - 1/3, 2014 Snowstorm
CPK is a sub par weather station year round. The dubious snow totals, and it is overgrown with vegetation in spring/summer often suppressing correct wind measurements and distorting wind direction and rain totals. Also creating summer time highs lower than surrounding urban areas.
For a time TWC stopped using CPK on its national maps and used LGA for NYC instead. In recent years they have gone back to CPK.

CP YOU WILL LOVE THIS:
I tweeted the Eyewitness news METS "Please teach the Central Park Zookeeper how to measure snow!"
Bill Evans immediately replied: " It was The Red Tail Panda's turn to measure the snow"

And CPK still at 6.0 I see, I may call the NWS today.
PLEASE DO! CONFERENCE ME IN!!!!!!! THIS IS AN OUTRAGE. AND NOW ALL MAJOR MEDIA OUTLETS ACCROSS THE COUNTRY WILL REPORT THAT NYC GOT 6 INCHES OF SNOW!
Welcome to my world, it happens every year, time after time, after time.
Most local Mets know about it but no one ever does anything. Bill Evans use to joke about it with me all the time. He believes the average winter snowfall in NYC is about 5 inches more than what is officially recorded each year. Paul Kocin actually was on the phone with the zookeeper during the February 11 2006 storm that set the record at 26.9, he made them list hourly updates because he knew it could be a record setting event. Without his input that storm would now be recorded as 19.9 or some bogus figure like that.
I could write a book, but who would read it.
THE 2 MOST EGRIGIOUSLY BAD SNOW REPORTS THAT STAND OUT TO ME IN MY LIFETIME ARE THE BLIZZARD OF 96 AND THE DEC 26, 2010 BOXING DAY BLIZZARD. IN 96 WE HAD ABOUT 3 FEET IN BROOKLYN AND OVER 30 INCHES REPORTED ALL OVER THE 5 BOROUGHS. THE ZOOKEEPER RECORDED 20. 20! WE HAD ENOUGH SNOW TO JUMP OFF THE SECOND FLOOR BALCONY DOWN INTO THE FRONT YARD AND DIDNT EVEN FEEL THE GROUND! LOL
DEC 26 2010 WE HAD 30 INCHES IN BROOKLYN AND HIGHER AMOUNTS REPORTED ALL AROUND. WHAT DID CENTRAL PARK GET? YOU GUESSED IT! 20 INCHES.
There are many others, the February 5th 1978 storm was the first I noticed as a 16 year old. 17.7 inches when the realty was 24.0. The two you mention 96 I say CPK had 28 the boxing day blizzard I had a friend measure 25. What I've never understood is why doesn't he (it) ever over count? Just once.

Sorry Frank, I should have created a separate thread for this, "The Zookeepers biggest Blunders". You've known me long enough though, you understand.

Measured 10 inches in 2 different spots. Sometimes our snow totals are different from Central Park. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Usually not 4 inches different though.

The maps on whats going on Sunday and Monday are all over the place. I'll be having Ice pellets and possibly freezing rain on Sunday. Monday mix since temps will almost be in mid 40s (high 40s in some places) then the temp will take a dive bomb to 2º and a high of 9º on Tuesday. Phew!

NWS just updated totals.
LaGuardia Airport 7.9
JFK 7.9
Newark airport 8.5
Idiot in CPK 6.4
And every news outlet around the world reports NYC got 6 inches of snow. I gotta let it go.
