New Years Eve temps...whip out the heavy coat. Low 20's! 

Mid 20s, was colder in November, this pattern is pathetic in terms of winter.

People on TV are calling this a cold spell, when in reality the average low temperature this morning is 18 degrees.

You know it's going badly when the Mets start calling average temperatures for the season a cold spell.

December is going down as one of the warmest on record for the U.S.

That's some impressive ridging in the EPO region. No wonder why Arctic HP's are dropping south

Not a great analog, but 1965-1966 was a winter where the QBO was stubbornly negative and did not reverse until February and Meteorological spring. Dec. 1965 CPK saw 0 inches of snow, 11 inches in Jan, and 9 inches in Feb. Below average overall.

Its 17 here now and brisk out, hands go numb after a while, more winter like but still feels wrong w no pond ice or snow.

True that. Last winter was really great. Snowed light to moderate events every week it felt like and the cold kept it on the ground all season long.

Since 1869 the average snowfall for January through April in CPK is 22.1 inches

Since 1994/95 there have been 8 Decembers with an inch or less of snow in December. All of those Winters have had below average snowfall for the following January through April.

The last time I checked 8 for 8 equal 100% accuracy.

The average for those 8 after December is 10.6 inches, less than half the average.

Winter is over, the omnipotent and all powerful and all knowing "December prognosticator" has spoken and it in the last 20 years has never and I repeat never been wrong.

It will be almost impossible for January to be any worse. Just as bad I suppose is possible but hopefully not likely.
