Thanks for the kiss of death Janet, you posted the above on December 1st to open this thread. Yes this December is all your fault.
It's time to find a scapegoat, the natives are restless. Who did we blame in past years until it finally started snowing?
Math, you're the board historian, I believe it was someone that only posted once, I can't remember the name though.
Oh well. Actually I am thankful the weather held off. Been so busy, having a lot of snow would've sucked, and that's coming from a big snow weenie. Don't have time to track these fantasy storms the models keep predicting 2 weeks out, better to keep my sanity and wait til January like we all knew we should.

Same as last year at this time and I was overthrown so don't be barking up this tree you downtrodden weenies the glass is half full. These temps suck period but lets look forward to what is to come.
We had a cold spell first week of Jan 4th to 8th and then moderated until the 18th and then hit pay dirt for 7 weeks.
General Snow Weenie Mugno is finished here.

You want to talk misery? Try this...
December 25 1964 Hi 60 Low 49
December 26 1964 Hi 60 Low 50
December 27 1964 Hi 60 Low 36
I've seen this before.
January 1965 got cranking:
6.3 inches on the 9th
4.6 inches on the 16th
3.2 inches on the 24th
All measured by your good buddy at CPK.
Doc:
The pattern will change eventually, hopefully sooner rather than later because that's weather, but you have to admit we've never seen a prolonged mild spell in December like this, because it's never happened before.
For the whole month of December to average out the same as a normal April, is unprecedented.
You're right about that,CP, I have never seen such prolonged mild weather in a December like this one.You would get a few days in the 60's but maybe the first week of the month.Ridiculously mild in November as well.It does put a major damper on the Christmas spirit.I have very little as a result of the mild weather.Perhaps for ONE DAY on saturday I might get it seeing a few flurries.
I used to keep daily records in the early 60's and I found a journal from December 1963 in Fort Lee NJ.The highest temperature that month was one day,the 8th, when it hit 52 degrees. That was the only day in the 50's.Additionally, there were only 4 days when it went above 40, 42 on the 5th,44 on the 6th,47 on the 7th and 40 on the 9th.From the 10th to the end of the month, the high temperature never made it above 40! 12 days it never got above freezing!
In addition, there was 16 inches of snow that month, including the 9 inches that fell on the 23rd.That year was a White Christmas.

An amazing contrast Doc. It was I believe 4 years ago that we had an early December snowfall of 6-10 inches with the temperature hovering near 10 throughout the storm. If I was home now id look up the exact date. What a difference each year can make.

Re: December 2015 Observations & Discussions
Yes, CP, Decembers are a wild card around these parts. No telling which way it will go unlike areas in Northern New England which are predictably cold and snowy in December.Just glad I have been around long enough to see many a cold and snowy December as evidenced by my data from December 1963.
Can't remember if that was 3,4 or 5 Decembers ago, at my age circuits are frying, but that was a good early season snowstorm with cold.(the one you mentioned above).
The Thanksgiving snowstorm last year up in our neck of the woods was one I'll always remember as my welcome to the HV.

Temps Saturday and Sunday will be virtually the same. Upper 30's to low 40's as high's getting down into the 20's at night. I guess this could put people in the Christmas spirit...but it'll warm up again.

Re: December 2015 Observations & Discussions
Wow!!! it got all the way down to 28 this morning, and the normal low for this date is 20. So only 8 degrees above normal for the low, and this is the cold wave, albeit for two days.
The normal high is 38 today which is about where we'll end up, so at least the high for the day will be close to normal. I think I'll hibernate until mid January and hope something has changed by then.
I'm using the temperature averages in the above for the HV, not NYC. NYC averages today are 42 for the high and 31 for the low.

Re: December 2015 Observations & Discussions
@Doc and everyone, talking about the past but not too distant past...I think it was when I move up here and had either my first Xmas here in Orange County or the second...Dec 2001 or 2002...we had an incredible ice storm around 1 pm Xmas day...ice formed super fast and it was life-threatening. Neighbors came over to spend the day because they could not travel on 84. What an ice storm it was...formed at least an inch on the ground. Never saw anything like it...happened so quick. This morning, there was the merest suggestion of flurries and a tiny bit of coating on the deck.
Nothing to write home about.
27 this morning at 7 am. Steady wind, just enough to get you cold but not very much really.Earlier this week and part of last weekend, we had the heat off as in switched off for four days. Great on the heating bill but ridiculous for weather. I live up here and pay taxes out the wazoo just to get a change of seasons. We will be barbecuing later in the week if it gets as warm as it seems it will be.

Damian, that ice storm might have been 2001 because I remember Dec 2002 as my beloved just had moved into a townhouse in Monroe.I was in Fort Lee and on Christmas Eve it started pouring rain in the early afternoon. This changed to very heavy wet snow by the evening and 12 inches fell there.Up in Monroe the GF had 18 inches of more powdery snow with drifts.VOILA!! A classic HV snowstorm with more powdery snow than Bergen County.18 inches fell in Monroe.

Felt great this morning going to the Home Depot and that cold wind biting my face.THAT'S the way it should feel a week before Christmas!
Good idea taking that break, CP.This mild weather is a b_ll buster for us Weenies. As Mr Wilson used to say on the old "Dennis the Menace" TV Show, "I'm going to have to take my nerve medicine!"
34.5, 63%, 29.88R. Still breezy.
