How can a trained spotter report 5 inches of snow in my town to the NWS as of 10:30 am when I measured almost 11" at noon. Just look at the picture I posted from 11:30. I repeat again what the hell does the NWS exist for????.

The Hudson valley guys will get more snow than us Long Island folks by the time it is all said and done this winter. GUARANTEED!! I just spoke to my parents up in Ulster county NY in the Catskills. I told them we got almost a foot and they didn't believe me. They didn't even see a flake. It was sunny most of the morning. This year they've seen 11" total while here I am sitting at 38"

Maybe he was under a 5 inch per hour micro band from 10:30-12:00 and his next report he'll catch up to you.
I've asked the same question about the NWS and they way they measure snow for 30 something years.

The 2 towns on either side of me both reported 11 and 10 respectively. It's insane. What is central parks official measurement anyway?

I think it's time for everyone from NYC on east to start updating those seasonal averages. They still include the most snowless decade ever the 1980's. In 5 years when the new 30 year averages are calculated you will all be in the 30-40 inch range.
It actually annoys me when I see TWC and other area Mets post the NYC average as 25.1. The 30 year average 1981-2010 is actually 25.8 and was corrected by NOAA in 2014 when someone pointed out to them that they couldn't add and divide. Yes I take full credit.
The running 30 year average for CPK is now 28.6, the average since 1991 is 30.6, and the average since 2001 is 33.8 inches. A pretty remarkable rise when also considering the many under measurements in Central Park during that time frame.

Thanks Doc. The funny thing is it's not rocket science. You find a cold surface and measure a few different spots with a ruler. Or in my case a yardstick. How could someone who breathes oxygen possibly screw up something as easy as measuring snow?

Looks like the snow is tapering down in East Hampton. Measured 7.2" at 2:15 PM. Power surges and still unplowed roads.

Wow, I didn't know that! That's incredible how much the average has risen. Well, in that case I'm just a little over season average. Hoping for more ahead! I truly hope you can cash in on a big one in the near future CP, there's nothing better than a large snowstorm!

30"+ avg winter snowfall (if it holds up) in NYC is remarkable. Its a new era.

Dtone:
If it somehow doesn't snow in New York City between now and December 2020, God forbid it's never happened in one season I couldn't imagine it happening for five years, the 30 year average calculated between January 1991 and December 2020 would be 26.3 inches. That's already a half an inch greater than the current 30 year average calculated from January 1981 through December 2010 which is 25.8 inches. I'm not going to say the 30 plus inch average is guaranteed but if we can avoid a four-year stretch like the late 90s it's a lock.

That four year late 90's bust was something that was quite common in the 60's, 70's and 80's.In the last 16 years, I think there were only a couple of single year busts in there.
I remember 30,40,50 plus years ago always listening to old timers bragging about "winters that always had much more snow, etc etc!" Now if I live long enough and this snowy trend continues I will be saying to the youngsters, "Yeah, I remember winters with a lot LESS snow!".LOL!

Syo, it's obvious that you and I have never met! I am also grateful that CP doesn't live close to me. I'd hate to have him double checking my measurements!

80's yes, 60's and 70's not so much. The 1960's and 70's were consistently cold winters with a moderate amount of snow and several really good years snow wise, okay we had 72/73 but never a four year stretch like the late 90's.
The 1980's as I have mentioned many times is the most snow less decade in our history and many of those winters were mild on top of snow less.

Re: 02/05 "Surprise" Storm Obs. / Final Call Snow Map
I just want to say to Frank, Sroc, Oldtimer, Cp and Doc. Thanks for not forgetting us EPA people. Come on guys I need you to use your weather magic to muster a BIG snowfall for all us who are in a snow deficit this season. That includes the people in the HV who haven't seen a flake yet.
We need your help desperately to try and get us some of that white gold. I'm hoping that next week things will work out for our areas, but it seems like all the local Mets in my area are writing the next up coming events as just some snow showers. We shall see. Thanks again for not forgetting us and we all appreciate your hard work in forecasting these very unpredictable storms. You guys are the best !
