Today marks the 56th anniversary of the Dec 11-12 Blizzard that started on a SUNDAY afternoon up here. This storm got me interested in weather and especially snowstorms in the Tri State area.
Clouds were lowering and thickening all morning and the sun gradually disappeared in the eraly afternoon.Temps were in the low 30's.The first flakes began around 3 PM.Snow was light to moderate until around 8 or 9 PM when the storm really began to ramp up.There was around 3 inches at that time.I could hear all night long the wind picking up and howling.Woke up to over 20 inches on the ground, snowing moderately at 8 AM.Temps plunged to single didgits that night and two days off from school!
This newsreel footage above shows what I saw that morning in Fort Lee NJ.

^^ Great stuff Doc
Something that is irritating one and frustrating two.
Irritating: I have read a few forums and people on the coast complaining about the weather IMBY posts that this weather sucks yada yada yada when in fact the coast has killed it going back to 2009-10 - grandiose expectations that are psuedo on the big picture of the weather in this area. The elevation folk are to climo speaking have this AND we're seeing it this year so far and I read and see folk complaining and being negative. Scott said it best as he was brought up - if you have nottin' good to say then dont say it.
Frustrating: The wash rinse repeat cycle we are in and the LR forecast of the SE Ridge coming back.
I will take my snow tonight and enjoy it as I will relish in the cold over the next 10 days along with some snow for my kids ice rink and those who love to get that xmass feel of winter with this weather. Again beats the heck out of the last number of Decembers

F the "southeast ridge".
That and the words "super El Nino" bring fear and consternation to every snow lover in the northeast.

Mikey hands down last December. I was out golfing and fishing.
I love snow more than anything, but cold and then just warm enough for rain is the worst weather imaginable. This weather is useless.
Hmm, well last December you were ticked off at the idea of doing the warm weather activities in December. Here is a post of yours from the Banter thread from Monday December 14th, 2015 at 8:57 AM:

Not so much memory as much as fact checking whether James actually cherished the warmth last December, which as that post shows you he did not.

That is a good rink! Sat I went past Mountain Creek resort and they have these many towers that are snow-making machines. Tremendous to see! All of them were spewing out snow. I can't say exactly how tall and how big the opening but probably 80 feet high and at least 8 feet diameter openings. Seeing 4 to 6 running at once...wonderful to see snow. I bet these bad boys running 8 hours a day get the slopes covered.

Anyone else have their weather station linked to WU? Their site is resetting my accumulated precip every hour, but my console at home is fine... I have been trying to get this resolved with them for a couple of weeks, but no success yet..

Two days of 20's and teens (thu-fri). And then upper 40's sat-sun. And rain again. I don't how many chances we will have this winter but this pattern is terrible Two Great blasts of artic cold and we all couldn't get a decent snow out of both........ so fustrating. Twenty to twenty five degree spreads in 2 days CRAZY.

It's extremely frustrating.
Sometimes I wish we were in last December's pattern because at least we were not teased with cold. It was in the 60's and 70's

At least this December is normal as of today temperature wise, so with that at least we stand a chance, last December not so much.

True, but the rain kills me.
30's and rain? That's like putting a brownie in front of a fat kid then taking it away from him. No snow, I mean, brownie for you.

Re: Wx Banter Thread 2.0
The CPC 8-14 day outlook brings about what Frank has told us was coming for quite some time: a blowtorch in the East around Christmastime. And I checked the analogs. One of the dates that appeared: January 6th, 2007, when it was 72 degrees and sunny in NYC. I remember as a sixteen year old taking a walk to Baskin Robbins in Floral Park for a milkshake that day wearing an open spring jacket. (James, it's where the Dunkin' Donuts is on Hillside Avenue and 255th Street, one block east of Little Neck Parkway) My mom's friend's daughter had her sweet sixteen that night and they were worried months prior to the event that it would be snowed out or that it would be too cold for the attendees. It was anything but that that night.
Here is the image by the way. 1/6/07 is the second date. And boy does that pattern scream anti-snow. At least we're able to get a taste of winter in December this year...

The average high and low temperatures in these parts on Christmas day are 36 and 18 for Orange County and 40 and 29 in NYC. If we start talking 50's and 60's again on Christmas Day then we are really getting scrooed, BIG TIME, AGAIN!!!!!!

I remember in 2009 I believe it was where the PV wreaked havoc on us from like the end of December to mid January. One of the longest I can remember. Half the globe was frozen. God forbid we get a 3 day cold snap now.

Cold shot coming into play M-W next week and hangs a bit to keep things about N to slightly above through xmass now. Snow pack will be pretty good if things play out for I 80 N and West - sorry coast and LI to much Ocean warm influence this time of year.
GFS says hi Fri into Sat - 3-6 N & W and 2-4 NYC metro

Re: Wx Banter Thread 2.0
Yes mugs too much cold air around for it to get significantly warmer Before Christmas. If the long-range patterning verifies and stays for a while then it could get warm around the new year but I'm skeptical about that. Also this being a good December or not varies on where you're located in the metro area. Areas as far away as 25 miles from the coast are going to have a nice December while coastal areas will frown on this month. Places like orange Ulster Sullivan counties already have more snow than last year or will have it by this weekendamugs wrote:Cold shot coming into play M-W next week and hangs a bit to keep things about N to slightly above through xmass now.
