Re: March 2017 Observations & Discussions
I got beat up moving the snow around. It was a heck of a storm. But I think March is over and out. I bet we get some rain by the weekend and that will melt it all with unfortunate flooding. Remember in about eight weeks, the leaf canopy will be out. The cold is easing and today I saw 43 with lots of sun. I was chased out of the house for having the wood stove on. Can't even have the heat on because the house is so warm. Windows were open today.

The snow..really ice and sleet boulders, are really melting. I noticed large patches of grass visible. It is incredibly wet, that snow pack has huge moisture content. I like snow but I'm sick of the lost lanes of traffic, congestion and impossible parking.

Maybe 12 or 13 inches of snowpack remain. Was in Nyack NY yesterday, many patches of ground showing there already.Rain showers possible tonight and tomorrow. Its going to be tough to hold this snowpack to April CP if this keeps up.

Re: March 2017 Observations & Discussions
I'm tracking how quickly or not the mid to late March climate will melt the current snow pack. I picked a flat spot that has no sun until the afternoon.
I ended the evening on Tuesday the 14th with a snow pack of 21 inches.
By Wednesday (15th) morning even with frigid overnight temps near 10 the compression had brought it down to 19.5 inches.
With the high of 22 on Wednesday, little sun and snow showers throughout the day the snow pack Thursday (16th) morning was 18.8. Probably more compression than anything.
After a high of 35 Thursday the snow pack Friday (17th) morning was 17.5 inches.
After a high of 45 Friday the snow pack Saturday (18th) morning is down to 15.2 inches.
After a high of 35 Saturday with clouds and snow showers most of the day the snow pack is 15.1 inches Sunday (19th) morning.
After a high of 44 Sunday with sun most of the day the snow pack is 12.6 inches Monday (20th) morning.
To be continued tomorrow morning.

Doc I hope it melts fast. Sorry. I don't want muddy high rivers and streams for the April 1st trout opener.

Jimmy, I refuse to answer on the grounds that it may incinerate me! LOL, you know where I stand on THAT matter!!!
Cp's snow melting study is very interesting.Looks like we are losing roughly 2 inches every 24 hours. That gets us to 6 days hence, sadly, not to April.

After a high of 56 Tuesday (21st) with sun most of the day and a Wednesday morning low of 29, the snow pack Wednesday (22nd) morning is down to 7.5 inches.
Yesterday 3.5 inches in snow depth was lost, the biggest loss in a day since I began following. A 56 degree day in late March with full sun, will do that. If this was not a mature snow pack most likely more would have been lost yesterday.

This could be the last single digit night up here until next Winter.Lee Goldberg said this last cold blast would be it until next Fall-Winter.Hoping this cold weather this March will end the ghastly 20 month run of above normal temperatures.

Re: March 2017 Observations & Discussions
After an afternoon high of 29 Wednesday (22nd) with sun and high winds most of the day and an impressive Thursday morning low of 10, the snow pack Thursday (23rd) morning is 6.8 inches.
Yesterday only 0.7 inches in snow depth was lost, despite a bright March sun most of the day. Areas on hills sloping towards the sun all day are beginning to show bare spots. 80 days and counting for at least 1 inch of snow cover since November 20th. Considering how mild other than March this winter has been I can't complain about the snowfall totals or days with a snow pack. To be continued tomorrow.
Below is the snow cover of 1 inch or more so far this season. Despite a top ten warmest December through February incredibly it stands at 80 days and counting this season.

I could use 1 more month of above normal temps for April, don't want to be freezing at Citifield! Got tix for 3 games the first week!

Re: March 2017 Observations & Discussions
Be on the lookout for some icing N&W of NYC tomorrow morning. It will be brief if any at all.
Saturday through Tuesday looks unsettled. Clouds, periods of rain, but it will be fairly mild. 60's Saturday, 40's Sunday, 50's Monday & Tuesday. Total rainfall probably around 1 inch or less.

After an afternoon high of 41 Thursday (23rd) with sun most of the day and a Friday morning low of 21, the snow pack Friday (24th) morning is 6.0 inches.
Yesterday only 0.8 inches in snow depth was lost, despite a bright March sun most of the day and temps that were above freezing by early afternoon. Most of the reduced melt rate I would attribute to the condensed ice pack the almost two feet of snow has compressed and melted into the past 10 days. Areas on hills sloping towards the sun all day show bare spots. 81 days of snow cover this winter and counting, To be continued tomorrow.
