January 28th-29th Ice Threat

A warm front will be approaching the region during the day Monday along with an area of low pressure. This will result in a burst of precipitation that will be cold enough at the begining of the storm to start as snow and then gradually change to sleet/freezing rain and then rain as we head into Monday Night. The concern is during that Snow/Sleet/Freezing Rain period that will occur during Monday Afternoon will cause some slick travel and light ice accretions. We will use this thread to track this event.

Upton for my area

Monday : A chance of snow before noon, then a chance of rain, snow, and sleet between noon and 3pm, then rain and snow likely after 3pm. Cloudy, with a high near 36. Light south wind increasing to 6 to 11 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

As for Monday, morning commute could be a rough one. EURO showed several hours of freezing rain that morning.

NYC and Especially LI have a surface temp of 10-15 right now. Your telling me that they are going to warm above freezing tmw with a temp of only 35 quick enough to not allow ice and therefore not issue a WWA NWS? Ur gonna be sadly mistaking tmw.

I hear you - I definitely believe that the school officials (like my school in Allendale BC) will have the presence to send everyone home early - you still count it as a day of school and move on. Ice is the scary part of this and it seems we will have a small but decent accreation - 1 to 2/10's is what they are saying.

The radar looks really nice. Nam has snow to sleet to rain for the NYC area with temps near freezing throughout the event with more wintry precip to the north.
