Hi,

Temperatures were well above normal here in Bergenfield. This continues a trend of 16 months during which have we experienced temperatures above the long-term mean. The average temperature was 70.9 °F ( 21.6°C ). This is 3.5°F above normal. A late-season heat wave saw temperatures reach a maximum of 92°F ( 33.3°C ) each day from the 8th through the 11th. It wasn't until the last week of the month that temperatures fell to normal levels.

It was a dry month with a precipitation shortfall of about 40%. The precipitation deficit for the past 12 months now stands at 11.08". The greatest daily rainfall of 0.69" ( 17.5mm ) occurred on the 20th while a total of 2.31" ( 58.7mm ) fell during the month.

Despite the persistent warm weather only one daily temperature record... 94°F ( 34.4°C ) was set on the 14th. Temperatures exceeded 90°F ( 32.2°C ) on four days.

Rainfall of 0.30" ( 7.6mm ) on the 24th was also a new daily mark.

16 straight months of above normal? That can't be right, can it?

Surprisingly... it is!
I have 33 years of weather records here in Bergenfield ( going back to 1983 ). The last month with below average temps was June 2015. October
2015 came in as exactly normal. April 2016 and May 2016 came close ( +0.2F and +01F ).

I realize now that I may have worded my report incorrectly... I should have said that we haven't experienced below average monthly averages for the past 16 months.

That cool down at the end of the month stopped many sites from being the warmest Sept ever. Still was warm enough to be in the top 10 warm Septs across the region.
Seems since that cold Feb 2015 we turned well above normal and never looked back. Only an occasional near normal month breaking the trend of well above or record warm months.

This is very interesting.I lived in Mahwah from 1980 to 2014 and kept only snowfall records, not temps , so your post here is interesting.Good to see a Bergen County resident on here.I'm up in Monroe NY where the temps are 5 to 7 degrees colder than you in Bergenfield.

Hi,

I decided to visit the NOAA Weather Service Site at Upton, NY and check out Central Park's temperature departures over the past 16 months. Here is the result...

2015
Jun -0.2
Jul +2.3
Aug +3.8
Sep +6.5
Oct +1.1
Nov +5.1
Dec +13.3

2016
Jan +1.9
Feb +2.4
Mar +6.4
Apr +0.3
May +0.4
Jun +0.9
Jul +2.2
Aug +4.0
Sep +3.8

This warm weather has become monotonous . At the end of every month I do a recalculation of Bergenfield's temperature normals... and I'm always making upward adjustments.

Take it easy,

Rudy
