ended up with almost an inch on colder surfaces. had 8 hours of light to moderate snow. if surface temps were a few degrees colder would have 3" easily.

I was thinking the same thing. Between about 4 p.m. And 8 p.m. It look like several inches of snow easily fell had the ground been a few degrees colder. It took sunset and heavy snowfall to get anything to stick. Those few hrs looked more impressive than anything that Nov storm delivered.
Central Park recorded 0.5"
LGA 1"

I had 1" on cars and grassy surfaces, coating in spots elsewhere.

Jman, do you remember Christmas Day 2002? Here in Queens, it was raining during the morning and early afternoon, then it changed over the heavy wet snow. I must have gotten around 10 inches of snow from that. It was also the first time I ever remember witnessing thundersnow. I was 12 years old then.

Also the next day, we went to a resort in the Poconos where they got 2 feet of snow from the storm. The snow was so deep that we got to go snowmobiling during the trip. I can assure you that Christmas break has a special place in my heart Smile

Math 2002 I was in college in Hartford cT but i imagine for x-mas break I was in Guilford CT, I do not recall heavy wet snow, did it miss that area or did that part of CT just get rain? I certianly remember rainy christmas.

Remarkably, the snow map I issued a full days 2 before this storm turned out to be pretty ok. Considering all the model chaos and the inconsistency, I thought it worked out pretty well. I did say in the text forecast that the coast should see non-accumulating snow as well (it did accumulate for some but has already dissipated)

A lot more to track! Will have a long range blog up this weekend.

Upton just stated that CPK got 1.0" of snow over since Wednesday bringing the seasonal snow total to 1.2." Just another 1.7" before it overtakes 1972-93's 2.8" Smile

Also, if the December prognosticator holds true this time around, CPK needs an additional 2.0" and we can say the rest of the winter will have at least 20"

Thanks Al, it is a struggle keeping after them.

Math: The December prognosticator works when December has 6.0 or more inches in December. When there is 3.0 inches or less CPK gets a crappy winter.

The 3.1 to 5.9 range hasn't come into play in 30 years so I don't make a call on that range, not enough data and when I originally looked into it I only looked at the last 20 years, I know you've looked back further since then.

The winter of 84/85 was the last time December had a December snowfall in the the 3.1 to 5.9 inch range. Which in itself defies all odds because the 30 year average in CPK is 4.8 and the 145 year average for December is 5.6 inches. That's one of the reasons I first looked into it.
