Winter Predictions Contest- Win $20 Amazon Gift Card
I have a lot of credit with Amazon that I never use thanks to school, so I figured I'll spice things up a bit this year and offer a $20 gift card to whoever gets the most points in this years winter predictions. The gift card will be emailed electronically to your email if you win. Here are the rules:
-The central location for these predictions is Central Park, NY, NOT your own town.
-Anything before November 1st does not count, this contest will BEGIN on November 1st.
-If there is a tie at the end, there will be a randomly chosen tie breaker question for just those people.
1. First day with day time high's in the 40's.
2. First day with day time high's in the 30's.
3. First day of measurable snowfall (>2 inches).
4. First day of scattered snow showers/flurries for NYC Metro Region?
5. How much total snowfall will fall winter 2013-2014 for Central Park, NY?
6. Number of SECS (Significant EC Storm >6 inches of snow)?
7. Number of MECS/Godzilla's (>12 inches of snow)?
8. Number of HECS/Roidzilla's (>24 inches of snow)?
9. First night with night time low's in the 20's?
10. First night with night time low's in the teens, if any?
11. Which month will have the coldest temp. departures from normal? (Dec, Jan, Feb, or Mar)?
Please do not re-post the questions in your responses. Just number 1 through 11 and put your answers beside it.
GOOD LUCK

lol I'm not very good at this game. My memory is terrible. I try to think of averages and I think average low temps in the 20's begins sometime in December or January.HectorO wrote:Wow Frank, thats a pretty bold prediction by you about the first night in the 20s being Jan 4th. Re: Winter Predictions Contest- Win $20 Amazon Gift Card
I am actually a fan of the weather channel naming system. I think it brings more awareness to the public since we can easily relate to a name, like we do with tropical systems.
Also, I can tell a number of people on this forum are waiting until October 31st to make their prediction. I think I should have done the same thing. LOL

Re: Winter Predictions Contest- Win $20 Amazon Gift Card
Here is the important part of the outlook:
Pastelok wrote:Winter weather lovers will have to be patient this year, as the start of the season in the East certainly won't pack a punch in terms of cold or snowfall. Winter will begin mildly, with a long duration of above-normal temperatures. One snow system and some chilly air could come at times during November, however.
Temperatures will fall in the latter part of the season, likely the beginning of January, allowing snow to fall along the I-95 corridor.
Philadelphia, which received only 8 inches of snow last year, will likely get higher amounts, but other areas from New York City to Boston should not expect to beat last year's totals. Overall, however, winter sports enthusiasts have a shot at an average season.
"It's not going to be a complete [snow] drought season coming up, but I think they'll have to wait until probably late in the season to get their best chances of the higher snow amounts," AccuWeather.com Expert Long-Range Forecaster Paul Pastelok said.

Re: Winter Predictions Contest- Win $20 Amazon Gift Card
An odd fact.
11 out of 12 predictions so far are between 30.0 - 39.9 inches of snow in NYC (including mine 36.8") this winter. The 144 year average in NYC (Central Park) is 28.4 inches so everyone is predicting a bit above normal snowfall which is OK by me.
The oddity is despite 30.0 - 39.9 inches being not that far from the norm, there has been only one winter since 1970 in NYC that has fallen in that range, (the winter of 2000/01 35.0 inches). Many higher than that, even more lower, but only 1 in the last 43 years within that range.
We all must know something

BTW - Franks 48 inches is the only prediction not in the 30-40 inch range.

Haha that's extremely interesting. I actually told my younger cousin to pick a number between 15 and 80, and she said 48. That's how I got my number. LolCPcantmeasuresnow wrote:An odd fact.
