Post snow totals for Jan 31-Feb 2 2021 storm
I'll start it off with 25 inches here in Highland Mills in Orange County NY, and still snowing lightly, and explain as follows.
I have 23.3 inches on the ground right now. I cleared my snow board last night around midnight and received another 2.2 inches last night. When I went to bed last night I had 22.8 inches on my snow board. The NWS says to clear the snow board at the beginning of each day (midnight) and add totals, not every 6 hours which is what the guidelines were several years ago (and should have never been changed IMO).
The reason I record 25 inches and not 23.3 which is now whats on the ground is snow compacts and settles as its own weight begins to compress it. Overnight even though I technically should have 25 inches on the ground it has already compressed to 23.3 but 25 inches is what to record for the storm total and whatever else falls today on your cleared area. Hope that makes it clear for everyone.
If your measuring for the first time this morning you're probably short changing yourself an inch or two.

16.5” Flemington (but still snowing lightly). That sneaky warm nose and sleet probably kept me from hitting 20.

Just passed 19". 20" is possible I think and considering there was sleet yesterday I'm very pleased with this storm.

Very unofficialy 25. 22 last night about 7:30. Still moderate snow. An hour later still 22 as it was snowing moderately. This morning 21. Depth shrunk from last night, so I guesstimating 25 total accumulation. Its the CP Effect based on his prior post.
@WeatherBob you may have the same problem and may have earned more that your listed 20.

Yeah, but it’s hard to figure. The 20 in number is a good avg for me. It might have been 22 tops but I did measure late last night. Didn’t get much here after midnight

Here in the north of Orange County just a mile from Sullivan County, a bit more than 26. Something like 26.5 and I was a little surprised at that. I thought it was more. My electric snowblower worked like a dream and it backed up the plow guy. Deer were walking around last night and this morning with bellies dragging in the snow. Those who said they were sorry they did not at least clean off the cars once and who waited until this morning...you were right. Heck of a job. It was still snowing here lightly as of 9 am. Onto Tues. Onto the Superbowl. Onto Valentine's Day.

Re: Post snow totals for Jan 31-Feb 2 2021 storm
As you can tell by the map heehaw posted above, my area on the border of southern Sussex/Morris county got absolutely obliterated.
I measured another 7 inches through noon today, adding to my total from last night of 26 inches to give me an estimated 33 inches this morning. I'm sure there was a bit of compaction, but honestly that's about as accurate a reading as I can gather.
Based on the reports coming in from trained spotters in and around my general area, 33 inches seems to be right on the money.
Absolutely incredible.
