Re: Pain in the Butt March 7th Godzilla: Observations
Think I'm just about done here. About 13" with very impressive rates for a three hour period. Pulling for one more before winter's end! Curious about Lower Bucks and TTN, some of those folks were under a death band for several hours.

Re: Pain in the Butt March 7th Godzilla: Observations
I just measured 14 inches in the spot that was 10 inches 45 minutes ago. Surely this cannot be? There is not a lot of wind so doesn’t seem to be much drifting.
I have never seen anything like this.

Lee Goldberg thinks heaviest snows will stop by 7pm. I'm hoping for a surprise slow down or stall.

What does these maps mean
Top map shows 700mb closed low position (black lines), and the purple on the NW side of the closed low indicates VERY strong frontogensis (strong lift).
Bottom map is the 500mb level which is about to close off and will also enhance lift to the N and W of it.

Re: Pain in the Butt March 7th Godzilla: Observations
this is going to be one of the biggest bust I've ever experienced in winter storms I have about 2 inches of slushy wet sloppy snow mainly on the coldest surfaces National Weather Service had me for 14 in many of the models 12 plus no way I'm reaching that I've been following winter storms for 40 plus years and I knew around 12:15 this was going to be a big fail light snow now even though I have dark green bands on the radar over head

Is that going to dry slot into LI, or should it pivot and cause it to rotate back around?
I have a feeling that dry slot does not get to LI
jmanley32 wrote:It's pouring snow here sideways winds picking up hoping I see some thunder snow think it's possible?
Possible, but not common at sunset.
nutleyblizzard wrote:Snowing heavily now. up to 3.5''. I have some big time making up to do if i want double digits.
Might fall just short. But this band over us is insane. Maybe 8?
jmanley32 wrote:So is this really ending NYC area in 4 hrs or less or much later? Wsw is till 4am.
Huh? The expiration time on a WSW does not equal the end time of the storm. They extend advisories purposely to account for hazardous roads, wind, etc. I've been saying end time is between 7-8pm (later east into LI). Could actually end sooner than 7.

What does these maps mean
700mb frontogenesis (all the purple over NJ) is where air is rising the fastest. An indication of where your heaviest snowfall rates are. 500mb low closing off means the surface low should slow down and best dynamics begin to fuel the storm.

Re: Pain in the Butt March 7th Godzilla: Observations
And I can't believe it but I have 15 inches...much higher then when I lasted used the Stick of Truth. Trees are heavily coated. Snowing steady. It will be interesting to see if it all ends by 7 like Lee Goldberg said or if it will go into 2-3 am. Snowing steadily.

Re: Pain in the Butt March 7th Godzilla: Observations
The view from my daughter's house In Kenilworth, NJ. I took a measurement but don't trust it. I got 3.5" but I didn't use my "official snow stick". It is just coming down gangbusters.

Well, I am going with my car measurement since that's where the snow stuck to first 14 in.

Try to keep "bust" posts in the banter thread.
Unfortunately I think timing of the storm played a part in this. First, the air mass was better than the one from the storm last week but still near marginal. During the day it took awhile for the changeover to occur. I also feel NYC did not get into the best banding. Dealt with some subsidence. That said, it should be coming down nicely by you right now.

Re: Pain in the Butt March 7th Godzilla: Observations
Still heavy snow. Closing in on 7" here. A couple notes, those power lines are beginning to sag quite a bit. And I've made three trips to knock snow off the spruce trees and arborvitae lining my backyard because they are young and the weight was bending the branches. So those trees you see, would be a big cone of white had I not done that three times already.
