Just took my latest measurement. I have 5” on the ground and still coming down. If I had tried to track what fell and melted earlier today I’d probably be at 6” for the day so far.

I have 6.1" of snow. I'm concerned about my measuring but I've been very careful. I took an old cutting board, put it on the picnic table in a fairly enclosed area. I seem to have more than Frank who lives a couple of miles West of me. He reported less snow than I would have thought. Any suggestions or ideas or reasons why I am measuring more than some?

Re: March Madness! Spring Snowstorm Observations Part II
I’m in a brief lull here. Heavier bands just to my southeast. If they rotate back here I think I’ll get another couple inches or more this evening. If it trains in place I may end around 6 for the day.

It is snowing at crazy rates and I measured in last one hour almost 2.5 inches now it is reaching 8+ inches and accumulating rapidly. I made a video but could not upload it.

Re: March Madness! Spring Snowstorm Observations Part II
Taffy, you are probably good. I have 6” for the day here and we’re in the same general region. With this event (and most snow events) snow totals can be very localized because heavy bands can literally sit over one town and miss their neighboring town. I’m sure based on my measurement you’re accurate or close to it.Taffy wrote:I have 6.1" of snow. I'm concerned about my measuring but I've been very careful. Thanks Bill. I was fairly certain I was messing up somehow. It's a great explanation and one I actually understood! I'll feel comfortable reporting my totals now.

I'm about as far from an expert on this board as is possible, but I think a lot of it has to do with how bands set up. I remember a storm where I grew up (Mohawk Valley) where one side of town got several inches of snow and the other side of town got nothing. Storms cut off where they cut off and there's not much anybody can do.
To those more knowledgeable, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Also Taffy, Frank posted his measurement over an hour ago when Union County was still under a heavy band. It’s very possible Cranford is over 5” now.
