February 17th 2024 Snow Observations

10.1 in Edison, 10.9 in Metuchen and 8.2 in Woodbridge

When I saw the banding setting up last night/early this morning, I knew it would be good.  But not THIS good!

Didn’t get that much snow except for the grass and tree tops but it is a beautiful winter wonderland ️

And down! I have just under 3 inches. It’s over. It’s all over.

This past Tuesday, I was at my apartment in Albany where there was no snow while my folks in the NYC area had several inches of snow. Last night and this morning was (almost) an identical scenario.  However, last night before the snow came in, I drove down from Albany to see my folks (and the snow).  Here is some footage I took just now from my parents house in Bellerose, NY, which had several inches of snow:

This area seems to be a soft spot this winter season. We did all right the last storm, but in other storms we've seen surrounding areas with notably higher totals. I chalk it up to subsidence, unfavorable thermal profiles, and premature snowblower adjustments.

Finished with about 2.5 in Eastchester. 14 for the season so far.

Solid 4-6 in southern nassau. Dark blue. So close to the 9-12 band.

30 degrees, cloudy slight breeze.Snow squall warnings popping up NW of me, must be a cold front coming in.

Measured front and back both said 11 inches ..dash tunneled his way off the dock..lol

My goodness the southeast sky is showing a dark, angry wall of something coming up north

Wow this really over performed big time just south of nyc. Bout 3 to 4 in yonkers. Driving home on 95 in CT very pretty trees covered. Maybe a inch or 2 here.

it did by me I didn’t get that much snow except for snow on the trees and snow on the grass. I gotta admit it looks very nice a winter Wonderland. I haven’t seen this in long long time I was hoping for more but hopefully we will see more snow chances coming up I hope.

I think the band of 8 to -12 in was influenced by the sea temp at the NY Harbor entrance point.; it’s 41 to maybe 43 in that general area. Does anyone have a comment on this?

Winds were light per the 11 pm to1 am time frame

Way to go Mom that's awesome and well deserved, and might I add a long time coming. What a great feeling to bury that ruler, so close to having to break out the yardstick.

I didn't check the wind direction but if they were off the water, and most likely in this setup they were NE, I would think ocean enhancement certainly helped.

Hit some crazy snow squalls on i95 from CT to yonkers. 1 was almost 0 visibility. This is winter!

I think there was a strong jet stream at 250 leading to pretty intense ascent in that left front quad that enhanced the baroclinically (temperature gradient) driven ascent. They lined up perfectly leading to intense frontogenesis over that area. These west to east relatively weak LP moving off the coast along the frontal boundary reminds me of I think it was March of either 14 or 15 in my area. That same thin narrow band under the “baroclinic zone” out performed every model by 3-5” every time that year. I happened to be under it multiple times that March where my 2-4 ended up 6-8 or a 3-6” ended 7-10”. It was an amazing March to say the least and it was all weak waves along a frontal boundary that just overperformed because of how tight the temp gradient was.
