Yep, standing outside on a warm summer night watching the horses come in.We went to the Trackside restaurant back in the days when you could smoke cigars before the anti-smoking mollies put the kibosh on that,LOL!
Campbell was a great jockey, made some nice money on him.One of my systems was to turn to the dope sheet and see who the one, two and three jockeys were.
Heard they built a whole new, smaller grandstand area.Gotta get my arse down there on a warm, Friday night.Problem these days....the purses stink due to such poor attendance. Not too long ago a buddy of mine hit an Exacta and won only 5 or 6 bucks.Piss poor!

I live about a mile away from the Belmont Racetrack. I usually like to take bike rides through surrounding neighborhoods and I went through Floral Park (syosnow94 is probably familiar with it) and as I'm going through the nice neighborhood, I encounter one of the gate entrances to get into the Belmont Parking lot. I've been there several times but not for the Stakes.docstox12 wrote:I picked American Pharoah in the Derby and Preakness.Great horse, lot's of spirit.Going all the way with the horse in three weeks at the Belmont for the Triple Crown.
Any of you youngsters into horse racing? It was a big deal in the 50's and 60's.When the Meadowlands opened in the late 70's, the joint would be packed on weeknights! Now, a mere shadow of it's former glory and the few racing Fans I see are all over 60 like me,LOL!
My 17 year old brother is really into it. Whenever there is a shot of the triple crown, he really wants to go there to watch the race. Unfortunately, it costs a lot of money to see it up close so we have to settle for the TV viewing.

Seven years ago when I graduated high school, the Belmont Stakes took place and Big Brown had a chance for the Triple Crown but lost the race. Well today, my brother (as I mentioned in this thread is a big horse racing fan) had his high school graduation and he was very happy over the triple crown which we saw when we got home.
And I mentioned how close I am to Belmont, well the diner near where we live in Bellerose is called the Triple Crown Diner.

Attention Yankee Fans!!!
How come the Mets thread gets twice as much traffic as your Yankee thread? Man, that just tells me area residents are much more interested in my Mets than your Yankees. Are you Yankee Fans going to let me get away with saying that or are you going to participate more in the Yankee thread with Frank and CP? Come on, support your team and give Frank and CP a boost.
Meanwhile, Myself,Dunz, Math and snow will be piling on the Mets posts, heh, heh, heh.....

Ehh. Its like pine tar in baseball. Many people do it; Brady simply got caught. In my opinion in no way shape or form does it take away from Tom Brady's greatness as a QB, and I absolutely hate the Pats and Brady in general, and any other sports team from that geographical region. This whole deflate gate was a waste of everyones time and money IMHO. Media took the story and made it into the mountain it became when in reality it was a mole hill.

A few words in rememberence of the great Yogi Berra.I watched him play in 1960 and 1961 and he was a sensational baseball player.Everybody loved Yogi that is is greatest testimony.A buddy's Mom lives in the same nursing home and when my pal visited his Mom, he saw Yogi in a wheelchair with a NY Yankee blanket on his lap.He shouted to Yogi.."is that an official NY Yankee blanket?" Yogi replied..."Yeah...you wanna buy it!". RIP and God Bless you Yogi, you were a CLASSIC!!!!!!!

Re: Sports Chat
Today was Vin Scully's last game of his 67-year broadcasting career which he began in the 1950 season before our very own docstox12 was born. Of course, as a Met fan, I usually associate him with his 1986 Game 6 game-ending call: "Little roller up along first....BEHIND THE BAG! IT GETS THROUGH BUCKNER!!! HERE COMES KNIGHT AND THE METS WIN IT!!!!!" Of course, I wasn't born yet, but I here it numerous times when watching Mets history documentaries. Also, he said that he was 80-years ago today that he first got into baseball when passing a laundromat where the score of Game 2 of the 1936 World Series was posted, which was Yankees 18, Giants 4. He felt sympathetic for the then-New York (baseball) Giants so he became a fan of that team. Of course, he switched to a then-Brooklyn Dodgers fan when he accepted the job offer from them to broadcast games.
Now think about this, his last game at Dodger Stadium ended in a NL West division clinching walk-off home-run for the Dodgers (the team he worked for all those years). AND, his last game (today) was a Dodgers-Giants game in San Francisco which ended up being the wild card clinching game for the Giants, the team he rooted for as a kid. It all came full circle.
Vin Scully is 88 and will be 89 in November. I hope he has a happy retirement!

Wonderful tribute you wrote up Mikey to the amazing Vin Scully. He will be missed.I personally miss all the old timey announcers, Red Barber, Mel Allen and Phil Rizzuto when I followed with the Yankees in 1960 and 1961, and our own Lindsay Nielson,Bob Murphy (now for the happy recap) and my favorite, Ralph Kiner of Kiner's Korner legend.Listening to Ralph talk about the baseball greats of the 30's, 40's and 50's, some of whom he played with, when Ralph was on the air, will always remain with me.Some of my Ralph favorites..."Tinkers to Evers to Chance" and "Spann and Sain and pray for rain!" I love Keith, Ron and Gary, but they were too young to get into that classic Ralph Kiner territory.
I'm psyched for playoff baseball! Gonna watch that AL game, I think its a one game do or die Baltimore-Toronto and of course our Mets game with the Giants. We have a shot...a rested Syndegaard and the big hitters mending their bumps and bruises with a few days off.

Former baseball pitcher Roy Halladay died in a plane crash today at the age of 40. I have relatives that live in Colorado, including a cousin that is the same age as Halladay. They both went to the same high school and were classmates.

I was at his no-hitter in the playoffs against the Reds in 2010. Still have the ticket and program. I've been to a lot of dramatic games, and playoff and World Series games. Also to a division-clinching game. But nothing will top being in the stadium for Halladay's playoff no-hitter.
