Re: Pain in the Butt March 7th Godzilla: Observations
Huge flakes now and falling heavily.
I usually interpret large flakes as a precursor to mixing issues, but clearly that is not the case here. What causes the flakes to get so large at seemingly random times during a storm like this when I have all this cold air in place?

they increased me to 12 to 18 also on fringe of 8 to 12 too but in the 12 to 18. Snowing for a while but big wet flakes in and out. No winds idd drone nearby said windy. Nothing sticking too wet and warm. I'm not sure what to think.Frank_Wx wrote:Fededle22 wrote:We have had snow all morning here. No changeover necessary. The new Upton totals put me in the 12-18 zone. Can that be right?
That seems high. Think I have you in 8-12

What your elevation Jim. I'm only at 600 feet Doc I think the same or near that. Are you near the river, because I've noticed in borderline storms are definitely affected by that and lack of elevation by the river hurts totals.
Great observation CP!! My Mom in Fort Lee is 350 feet above the Hudson and Edgewater is (obviously from the name) right on the river. There is always a 3 or 4 inch lower total in Edgewater than Fort Lee in havy snowstorms.Guess that can be extrapolated all the way up the river where it is still pretty wide.

37 degrees and the same light wet snow has been falling since daylight with no accumulation. Eerily similar to the last storm, at least to start.

For my LI folks:
Heavy bands moving in off the ocean now. About to fire island at the moment moving north. That will initiate the changeover. You'll see the skies darken up, temp will fall and fat flakes will take over

Re: Pain in the Butt March 7th Godzilla: Observations
Elevation is 246 and not to close to the Hudson. I just think with these type of temps in March it got to be really thumping during the daylight to stick to main roads or side walks.

Re: Pain in the Butt March 7th Godzilla: Observations
small adjustment from Mt Holly
new special statement at 11:30
Bands of very heavy snow with rates of around 2 inches per hour
will move across the region through this afternoon. During
lighter intensity late this morning, the snow will mix with rain
in some areas closer to Interstate 95. Roads will quickly become
snow covered, resulting in very hazardous or impossible travel on
all unplowed roads by late this afternoon. Visibility will be
significantly reduced at times to a quarter mile or less and
northerly winds will increase. This is when tree limbs may break
or some trees are uprooted, especially where temperatures hover
near 32 degrees. The result would be additional power outages.
As snowfall rates reach or exceed 1 inch per hour, accumulation
on roads will quickly become much more efficient and this will
make it difficult for road crews to keep up. Travel is not
recommended.

Re: Pain in the Butt March 7th Godzilla: Observations
The bad thing about this storm has always been the bulk of the snow falling during daylight hours. I’ve had 3 inches of snow it’s lightened up already and it’s already compressing. Nothing on the roads yet. Of course 1 to 2 inch per hour rates will stick any time in any month we shall see.
