Up to 3.4°, hoping for a -10° tonight. I haven't seen that since February 2016.

Damian:

January 19-21, 1994, I forget which morning they were all cold, got down to -23°. It was a deep snow cover, clear, and the winds were relatively calm which is ideal conditions for most inland locations.

Poughkeepsie, Newburgh and Middletown were all -18° to -22° that morning. I forget which town but somewhere in LI was -16° and a town in Sussex county in NW Jersey got down to -32° .

The record in the HV is from the January 1961 cold wave. Poughkeepsie recorded their all time record of -30° that day. Some maple trees in the area actually burst from the sap freezing inside. I've read it sounded like gunshots going off.

Yes in can get that cold in these parts.

CP and Doc maybe Zoo as well - I thought Warwick hit -30 anyway that was the coldest brutal arctic snap I have ever experienced.
River Vale NJ next town over from me in 1904 winter hit - 34
I like extremes, so I checked on the lowest temperature recorded in New Jersey. That was -34 F (34 degrees below zero) in River Vale, NJ (Bergen County) on January 5, 1904!

jman unfortunately we have to make up school days because school started  late this year due to update to all of our schools...they are now state of the art and we are in state of the art dept...lol.. we must meet our 180 days. We lost Columbus Day, we lost MLK day and we lost Jewish Holidays to make them up. Next year we will go back to our regular schedule. It just sucked they had school today. If today was not school conference day, they probably would have called a snow day....also today they had problems with the buses for the kids who do get a bus. 1 broke down, and 2 had sub drivers who did not know the route and forgot kids or passed right by kids..so they were out in the cold even longer...our school web page was on fire this morning and these are middle schoolers not the little one, but they were left in the cold none the less. Nightmare... at least its over and tom hopefully will be a little warmer and less windy..The winds are howling right now!!

I think the winds right now are the strongest this whole time. Car is shaking while I'm parked and a gust just came through sounded like freight train almost seemed like a straight line gust as all the trees were bending in one direction in a accession row. This is why wind fascinates me such a force we can't even see.

11 degrees here. Wind sounds like it’s finally dying down a bit. I started the day at the shore and the wind there was wicked. 50 mph gusts. I swear the house was moving with the wind this morning. Then got home this afternoon and was almost as windy here. Trash cans were tossed about my yard and the lamp on top of my lamp post in my yard actually blew off. Probably need to replace it.

Winds were intense today even hit 64mph on tip of LI! Here in westchester highest was 52mph in white plains, was this a NW wind? those always seem to be the winds that actually happen.

A balmy 6* with a real feel of -9*. And to think I thought it was cold the other day when it was 25*. Right now that would feel like a heatwave.

7.0°

Temperature never dropped a degree all night, after a high of only 9.0° yesterday. I figured with clear skies, a fresh snowpack and dying winds sub zero for a second night in a row was a lock.

Speaking as the spouse of an elementary school teacher, a 2 hour delay for this is absurd.

Doc my wife is a teacher in Newburgh, they called last night with a two hour delay. I know this makes me sound old but we never had a delay for cold when I was growing up, it's actually pathetic IMO.
