CPcantmeasuresnow wrote:billg315 wrote:For the immediate NYC folks, this is probably my shortcoming in not saying this before the storm but I’m not shocked. You guys are really in a special micro environment and in a storm like this, in March, with daytime temps in the 40s and temps during the storm of 33* - it is really hard to get accumulation to stick in that city. If it was in the 20s different story. But if you look at reports, areas east, west, south and north of the city - all with similar temps at or above freezing, are reporting 4-9”. I grew up in Philly so I remember this well down there too. I sometimes forget now out in the burbs. Next time we have this type of storm I will try to factor this into my pre-storm discussions.
Central Park measured 3.8 inches at 1 am when it was still snowing heavy. Their peak was probably around 3 am.
I'm sure since then it compressed and melted in half at least. Curious what they'll report. I would guess the peak was 5-6 inches around 2:30, but if they measure this morning at 7am or later it will most likely have compressed and melted to half that or less.
Interesting. Well that is consistent with the forecast then. I had NYC 4-8 and I saw others 3-6. I think people are also basing their measurements off pavement where it doesn’t accumulate as quick as opposed a snow board or grass.

EXCELLENT CP! Looks like we were in the jackpot zone.I was getting concerned with the S and E shifts. In fact, NWS had the low end of 3 inches down from 6 to 10 a few days earlier.Hey, a little over 10 inches and we get to normal here.Anyhoo, slightly below normal is a helluva lot better than MUCH below normal.
I'm curious what the trained spotter in Monroe will post Doc. If they measured at 3 or 4am right after it stopped I'll bet it was close to 10. This stuff is compressing rapidly on it's own weight.
Yep, I used your measurement for now CP but will go with the trained spotters, no offense my Buddy, as the final total. The trained spotters, like Janet, have the proper ways to do this rather then myself with my bad eyes LOL.

Looks like 7" here in Bloomfield. It stayed above freezing for the duration, or at least until I went to sleep at 2am, and it never rained.

NWS Mt Holly totals. Near me they have about 5.5” so I lost an inch to compaction probably in my AM measurement. I figured it was over 5:

Pretty much anywhere north of I-195 (except a few spots close to the coast) in those totals you are 4-9”.

I was in the Hunts Point Fish Market this morning there was three in on the pavement and I measured one truck that had 6.4 in that was parked overnight 2 hours later there was no snow left on the payment just some slush if you didn't measure when the snow is coming down you didn't get the right measurement it was blitzing snow for about 2 to 3 hours last night Central Park would never get this storm right no way

Shoveling snow it’s not as heavy as I expected. Most layers of the atmosphere plenty cold last night. Just probably 500 feet shallow layer towards the surface that was warm.

Al, Central Park measured 5.0 inches at 6:48 am and LGA 4.8 inches.
It seems like Central Park finally got their act together the last two years. Of course I have patiently waited for 40 years for that to happen. Now if we could only get them to correct the historic under measurements from the past.

Re: Sun/Monday March 3rd-4th 2019 Storm
There were some signs of this under performing for parts of the NYC area.
1.The mixing line was racing northward faster than most models had it
2. Marginal situations are terrible for the south shores of the NYC area
3. No cold high to the north which is needed for our area since we live near the water.
4. 850s weren't favorable at all
I have 15.6 inches for the winter

billg315 wrote:About 4.5” here (within my 4-8 zone so what I expected). But compaction could have cost me a half inch or so. Very heavy wet snow to shovel and clinging to everything. Just knocked it off my young evergreens - they’re still a year or so too young to have to bear all that weight. Getting stronger though! Lol.
You must be pretty close to me being in Somerville. I'm on the border of Branchburg, Readington and I guess Flemington and Raritan, but got 7" here. I noticed last night on radarscope that the mix line got within 4 miles of me using the distance tool. I'm guessing that helped me reach 7" and cut down accumulations for you, as it looked like it reached Somerville. During that time it was coming down very heavy here. Unfortunately one tree of mine got uprooted and landed in my driveway. It missed totaling my car by an inch or so. Thankfully only twigs hit the car and I don't see any scratches. Maybe the blanket of snow helped for that. Also, I lost half of another tree in my backyard. 3 tree's this week for me counting the windstorm on Monday, crazy! My best friend is going to be the tree guy!

Terrible luck Fdp23...hopefully the wrought iron fence was the only casualty, other than the trees I guess!
I stayed up for an hour last March, sweating one gigantic tree top, covered in a foot of heavy sticky compressed snow...I was positive she was gonna give out and come crashing down...

So we got 8 and a school closing. Funny now last storm school was closed the night before and here the town waited to 7 am. Still, kids can have a real winter day this year

I'll take your 7.3" and raise you .2 LOL!!!
I measured at 8:30AM and had 6.5" due to compaction so 7.3 she is
and I have 27.3" on the year, 7" BN and 13" in the last 5 days!!
If we had any type of N NAO or an anchored HP over N Maine or Quebec to drain cold into our region then snow ratios would have have been 10/12-15:1 not 8:1. The N NAO woudl have us snowing till late morning possibly now!!!
My temperature never feel below 31.5* for the storm.
Now onto the Arctic blast that will hit us this week
Great work here everyone.

Interesting that on this map and on the totals Dtone posted both the Wading River and Shoreham readings were 5.9 and 6.2" respectively and I measured 4.0". Again I got out late so Im sure we had compaction. Ill stick with my 4

Appeared to be about 5 inches in the Riverdale section of Bronx this morning.

look at that snow hole over NYC and into southern Westchester. How did that happen? We saw prolly 4 inches in yonkers meanwhile in white plains 11 miles away got 9.2 both closed their schools which was totally unnecessary. My school was one of the very few who only had a delay. Sat was more impressive.sroc4 wrote:amugs wrote:
