Nah, I'm not going anywhere. I'm teaching from home today. We have a remote day due to the bad weather. This sure beats driving on icy roads!amugs wrote:Awesome!! Be careful if going outbrownie wrote:Just started snowing here. It is already starting to coat my driveway and deck.
It's been snowing steadily for about an hour now. It has started to cover my street.

Re: JAN 26th Light Snowfall
Interesting variety of snow textures so far. Started with graupel, then all snow, then after it stopped briefly we got about five minutes of these huge cotton ball flakes falling very sparsely, like one here and one way over there, but very irregular, like someone was just randomly tossing cotton balls off my roof. My daughter yelled from her room "Dad, are you seeing this?!?". It was odd.

No longer snowing here - seems to be some other kind of frozen precip. I think it's too cold (30 F) for it to be rain.

Radar looks awful. Even less precip than modeled.

You can see the transfer of the low occurring now off the coast at 850 mb. The 0C isotherms may not get past route 78. However there is definitely warm nose at 800 mb or so. I have had not much but sleet and freezing rain from this. Mostly due to the lack of decent rates probably.

For someone like me who knows nothing about the dynamics of a storm, when you say transfer off the coast, are you referring to the area in lime green at the bottom right by the number 147 ? Also, I don't see the number 850 anywhere on your map. Could you explain how a transfer actually occurs? Thanks.
PS- I live on long island so I don't even know where route 78 is lol.

This picture is mesoscale analysis for air pressure isobars and temperature isotherms about 5000 feet above the ground (about 1 mile) This is generally referred to as the mid-levels of the troposphere.
The storm at the mid levels is transferring its energy to a coastal. This is in response to blocking to the north. The lime green is the mid-level storm forming. This tends to stop the progression of the warm air. Basically from NYC on north mid-level temps should stay below freezing. However, the surface on the coastal plain will or already has risen above freezing. I don't expect much out of this at this point for most. Very much inline with expectations so far.

I have about 1/2” of slop on my deck. It’s pretty and it’s white, and I got to see snow falling for most of the day. I’ll take it.

Roads just wet around here but sidewalks have ice accretion. Spots that are salted/treated are ok but where they aren’t, def slip and fall potential.

Could be 1.5 inches; difficult to tell. It melted some and fairly quickly. Just started up again. Light snow. Everything is coated. Birds were unusually intense around the feeders
