Re: September 2022 Observations and Discussions
I totally understand that oil is super expensive and when you own a house you have to conserve. This is one thing I like about a apartment building where it is included. I bet they wish they didn't put that in the leases now. Heat was on yesterday morning per my wife I was out, was chilly. Nice day though. The heat here is steam heat and honestly it gets too hot and since the radiators are under windows (what genious thought that up?) it causes major condensation and mold to form unless you are constantly cleaning the paint around the windows like 5x a day. Anyone know if there is something that can prevent this? Also love when it gets so cold that icicles start to form inside from the moisture.

49 degrees, cloudy calm.
J Man, I had a steam system for 35 years in my home in Mahwah.Best system ever IMO as those radiators stay warm for 1/2 hour after the boiler shuts down.
Do you notice steam rising from the valve on the radiator up onto the window? if so, another valve that reduces the steam flow could stop that. The landlord could do that.Other than that, keep the curtains or blinds down overnight.
Yep, your landlord will not be happy with the energy bill, lol. The old statement "so you want to be a landlord"? comes to mind. Not for me,lol.

Re: September 2022 Observations and Discussions
No you cant see it it is a very dry steam if that can make any sense. It is just the windows have very poor fitment, draft and no insulation, they actually wont let us have anything hang over the radiator as it causes mold in the corners of the apartment instead of going up and out it travels along baseboard (happened to us last year and i did not notice it because theres a shelf in the corner when i was cleaning I pulled it out and the corner was black ick. Yes it is time to move, old building everyone has pest problems but no one will say anything to the building dept. Here they will just condemn it and we will be homeless, we have a rent controlled place (grandfathered in) so we have only seen a $200 increase since rent prices in 2007, so what is now usually $2200+ for a 2 br we are around $1500. Not the best place but it is dirt cheap.docstox12 wrote:jmanley32 wrote:I totally understand that oil is super expensive and when you own a house you have to conserve. Yep booming away, just south of me here, we didn't get any wind like the alert said did you? Or hail. And the rain wasn't too heavy. Sharp cutoff, cool lightning though.frank 638 wrote:Heavy rain with crazy lightning

Re: September 2022 Observations and Discussions
So far just some rumbles of thunder and a little rain, that heavy band is just south of us so we have a break for now. We'll see if that line in PA holds together for NNJ.

Re: September 2022 Observations and Discussions
The strong storms last night ended the Yankees game early, and Judge's pursuit of 61 home runs early too. I was not there, but had a couple of friends who were disappointed. Looks like he'll do it on the road.
Some of our coolest temperatures that we have not seen in awhile will be with us this week. The magnitude of the trough over the eastern half is impressive. Check out that blue 'blob' off the west coast of Florida. That is Hurricane Ian. He is being suppressed verbatim, then once this trough lifts out and is replaced by a ridge, notice he makes his way north. By the time he reaches our latitude (if he ever does), he will be a strung out mess. Likely a weak depression.

Re: September 2022 Observations and Discussions
Two deluges came through today-12:30ish amd the close to 2:30 pm. Both lasted a half hr each for a total of one inch of rain so far today. Rain was completely unexpected. Sun is shining right now. I was happy to see it. My grass seed is soaked and covered by the hay I forked down. Speaking of more rain, If Ian even makes it up here by Sat, maybe we will get a few inches more

No rain Sat plz, I have outdoor plans. If its go be Ian it better be a worthwhile event (which I am pretty sure it won't unless somehow he comes out on SE coast and rides it but not go happen).dkodgis wrote:Two deluges came through today-12:30ish amd the close to 2:30 pm. Contrast couldn't be more stark. Here: Almost a perfect day 68* and Sunny; and at the other extreme: the devastation we are starting to see in Florida.

Re: September 2022 Observations and Discussions
39 degrees at 5. Frost on the pumpkin in a few weeks, summer loves lost for the young people, and gosh, in 8 weeks, Thanksgiving. I have had the woodcstove on once. I am remanded to my electric blanket. My wife will have the bedroom window open until Jan and no heat on in our room. It is a ying-yang thing

43 degrees, partly cloudy calm winds. Looks like we will get some rain from Ian, good news.
LOL, Damian, that ever present thermostat war between married people.Luckily for me, my wife and I have the same parameters.

38* at Niagara Falls this morning, such a pretty sunrise too. Going to be in the 60's today, beautiful fall days here with some color popping. Frost advisories are up here too.
