Recent advances in fusion, while promising, I fear are far down the road. While not very popular, I think we will eventually see more nuclear power being harnassed in the future. Interesting article here:

https://medium.com/predict/youll-be-shocked-to-know-what-the-most-eco-friendly-energy-is-a3f6db1dd39f

Admittedly, backers of wind, solar and hydro would be able to find justification for continued development in those fields.

With the push toward phasing out internal combustion engines in the not too distant future, it will be interesting to see which direction the powers that be will embrace. It certainly gives the average joe's like you and I a lot to ponder.

Just to add to the things to ponder check this out.  THIS IMHO is going to change humanity as we know it.  Up until this fall no one has been able to produce more energy then they put in.  This was the first hurdle.  Once we can harness the energy generated from fusion and put it right back into the system; then get it out and stored for the grid our energy issues will be resolved.  Its not a simple answer, but one that will come.

The thing about nuclear, Greybeard, is it takes 10 years to get all the permitting, designing and building done for a new nuclear plant. You remember back 40 or 50 years ago how people would protest nuclear plants or proposed ones.If we had developed nuclear properly from 1960 up, we would have hundreds of them up and running putting out clean power. The few we have now are nearing the end of their life cycle.Indian Point in this neck of the woods, was decommisioned a few years ago.

At age 72, don't think I will see the new era of fusion power but I do believe that or maybe small size fuel cell power plants for the home will be available.

Fusion is utopian ,been studying Nuclear since my Power n Wnergy College Professor turned us, me onto it in 1988 and teach it since 1993. We ate decades away. Input far exceeds output at this time for Fusion and we can notbproduce a sustained reaction lasting more than mere seconds due to the extreme conditions needed, 5 million degrees and 1 million psi Ina tokomak reactor of the world's most powerful electro induced magnets. It's utopian but will be decades from commercial use.
Fission has made great strides in its safety and energy production as well as waste recycling and maintenance. It is the best means for us an energy source to produce electricity.

Lastly, if we take CO2 down below 300 ppm we'll kill off plant and animal, many species. If we get to 250 ppm or lower......we become extinct. Why?? Simply, plants crase to live wout CO2. THINK  about that.

@sroc-I wholeheartedly agree that fusion would be an ideal method and was aware of the recent breakthrough last month, however, as mugs pointed out, we cannot produce a sustained reaction lasting more than mere seconds due to the extreme conditions needed.Fusion has always been the brass ring that we strive toward but regrettably is a long ways away IMO.

@docstoxx-I certainly remember the protests and unpopularity nuclear power garnered 50 yrs. ago. Plants were expensive to built and had a limited life cycle as you said. Indian Point a good example, and in Scott's and my area, Shoreham, which never even opened due to evacuation concerns. More here:

https://www.longisland.com/news/05-18-20/crazy-facts-about-the-shoreham-nuclear-power-plant.html

As you said, I won't see fusion happening in my lifetime. I can only hope my children will.

@amugs-I agree with your observation that Fission has made great strides in its safety and energy production as well as waste recycling and maintenance. It is the best means for us an energy source to produce electricity. Another good article:

https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2022/10/nuclear-power-power-plant-smrs-clean-energy/#:~:text=Nuclear%20power%20is%20back%20in,and%20they%20produce%20less%20waste.

I hope I will be around long enough to see some positive developments for the future of mankind.

It was a few weeks past nine years ago I joined. I took the plunge and joined the ABC weather chat only to find out it had its plug pulled. I don't even remember how I found this board-maybe a last post or two in the old ABC chat. It does not seem like 9+. It seems like a week ago. I have learned a lot about weather but the banter, cameraderie, humor, and overall balance and perspective to weather and life have meant much to me.

Thank you eveyrone for such a nice ride.

I was on the old Channel 7 Board run by Bill Evans way before NJ Strong started but it was nothing like our board here.Amazing ten years flew by so fast.Damian expressed nicely exactly how I feel about this board and the members. Here's looking forward to the next ten years.

WOW 10 years old!! That is incredible and a HUGGGE thank you to our fearless leader Frank for setting this up back then when Bill Evans and ABC pulled the plug back then. I cannot express the gratitude to Frank of giving us all this most wonderful opportunity to share in our passion of weather. We have been ahead of the curve by miles on the weather and I personally have learned SO MUCH over the years and cannot thank all of you for your participation in this journey/ Damien said it perfectly:
I have learned a lot about weather but the banter, cameraderie, humor, and overall balance and perspective to weather and life have meant much to me.
To 10 more years!!!!

That is pretty amazing that it’s been a decade. A big Salute to those who have been here the entire time, to those who have most recently sighted up, and of course to everyone in between. Happy Birthday to us!

Global warming sucks.

I would blame this more on pattern issues. Athough global temperatures rising can affect us. Let's not forget that over the past three to four years there have been parts of the world and even in our own country that have been getting blasted the past few winters, to the point where they're even asking for a break.

Ok. Maybe this is a bad dream. Maybe today is October 31st, and we just finished a nice brunch. Good coffee. A bit chilly, but that's a good sign. Football is about to start and Danny Jones is playing OK. Hopefully it's gonna be a good Holiday season with lots of snow.... right? Maybe???????

Happy birthday NJ strong. BTW OTI anniversary coming up next month, the Island has officially reopened with no detectable radiation found thanks to BILLg and his Dawn soap.

Back to matters of life and death. First death, winter is deceased. As of today I’m  declaring the period from December 1 to January 31 shall now be known as “Wall” it’s a little colder than Fall but not really Winter either. February 1 to March 31 shall be the season of “Wing” not really winter but not quite spring either. Winter as we once knew it no longer exists. Here’s to hoping this Wing season is a lot better than the last several Walls have been.

So if winter continues as is, I vote for a spring 2012 redux Very Happy We might as well have an early summer if we can't get some snow, right? *

*I can not confirm that this may or may not represent my lack of hope for any significant pattern change in the next few months.
