Admittedly, backers of wind, solar and hydro would be able to find justification for continued development in those fields.
With the push toward phasing out internal combustion engines in the not too distant future, it will be interesting to see which direction the powers that be will embrace. It certainly gives the average joe's like you and I a lot to ponder.

Just to add to the things to ponder check this out. THIS IMHO is going to change humanity as we know it. Up until this fall no one has been able to produce more energy then they put in. This was the first hurdle. Once we can harness the energy generated from fusion and put it right back into the system; then get it out and stored for the grid our energy issues will be resolved. Its not a simple answer, but one that will come.

The thing about nuclear, Greybeard, is it takes 10 years to get all the permitting, designing and building done for a new nuclear plant. You remember back 40 or 50 years ago how people would protest nuclear plants or proposed ones.If we had developed nuclear properly from 1960 up, we would have hundreds of them up and running putting out clean power. The few we have now are nearing the end of their life cycle.Indian Point in this neck of the woods, was decommisioned a few years ago.
At age 72, don't think I will see the new era of fusion power but I do believe that or maybe small size fuel cell power plants for the home will be available.

Fission has made great strides in its safety and energy production as well as waste recycling and maintenance. It is the best means for us an energy source to produce electricity.
Lastly, if we take CO2 down below 300 ppm we'll kill off plant and animal, many species. If we get to 250 ppm or lower......we become extinct. Why?? Simply, plants crase to live wout CO2. THINK about that.

@docstoxx-I certainly remember the protests and unpopularity nuclear power garnered 50 yrs. ago. Plants were expensive to built and had a limited life cycle as you said. Indian Point a good example, and in Scott's and my area, Shoreham, which never even opened due to evacuation concerns. More here:
https://www.longisland.com/news/05-18-20/crazy-facts-about-the-shoreham-nuclear-power-plant.html
As you said, I won't see fusion happening in my lifetime. I can only hope my children will.
@amugs-I agree with your observation that Fission has made great strides in its safety and energy production as well as waste recycling and maintenance. It is the best means for us an energy source to produce electricity. Another good article:

I hope I will be around long enough to see some positive developments for the future of mankind.

Wind only operates at its full capacity about 1/3 of the time — and solar only about 1/4 of the time — the lowest of all our energy sources. Which means, in a future powered by renewables, we’re going to need batteries.

Global warming sucks.
I would blame this more on pattern issues. Athough global temperatures rising can affect us. Let's not forget that over the past three to four years there have been parts of the world and even in our own country that have been getting blasted the past few winters, to the point where they're even asking for a break.

Back to matters of life and death. First death, winter is deceased. As of today I’m declaring the period from December 1 to January 31 shall now be known as “Wall” it’s a little colder than Fall but not really Winter either. February 1 to March 31 shall be the season of “Wing” not really winter but not quite spring either. Winter as we once knew it no longer exists. Here’s to hoping this Wing season is a lot better than the last several Walls have been.
