This is going to be tough. Find an area where there won't be much wind. Or use a flat table. But some snow may try blowing off of that. You will have to measure in several spot and take an average
Re: BLIZZARD JAN 26TH-27TH: OFFICIAL OBSERVATION THREAD
Wish a had a weather station. Winds seem really high by me but im also 4-5 miles from ocean. Think I'll pick 5 spots in the yard and take the average. Coming down moderately i think. Can't tell...wind is blowing snow upwards.

Re: BLIZZARD JAN 26TH-27TH: OFFICIAL OBSERVATION THREAD
Here in Syosset. 26 degrees. Wind cranking easily 30+ in gusts. Tried to measure but it's getting futile. I have a foot in spots and a coating in others. Looks to be about 6 inches.
Looking at the radar looks awesome, but I gotta say I'm a little unnerved at the direction the returns are rotating in. Correct me if I'm wrong but the bands coming this direction usually happens as the storm is pulling away. I know that's not what's going on, but I can't fathom them continuing until tomorrow afternoon from this direction. Can they?

I read on nws that you are to measure several areas not drifted nor bare but snow covered and are to take these and average them. But I know it is difficult

Frank, there is a lot of mention of the H5 closing off. In laymans terms can you explain what that means and how can you tell when it happens? Thanks

You'll get a better picture once the storm undergoes bombogenesis.

Does anybody know where the surface low is currently located and what direction it's moving?

H5 is the 500mb level of the atmosphere. We monitor 850, 700, 500, and 300mb levels very closely during storms like these all for different reasons. 300mb for jet streaks, 700mb for frontogenesis, 850mb for temps, 500mb for positioning and strength of surface low / orientation of trough and a host of other reasons. H5 is important on many levels.
When it closes off, it means the trough has become so strong and negatively tilted that it's no longer being controlled by a jet stream. It's essentially it's own entity. The surface low typically slows down or stalls, bombs out due to the consolidation of energy, and dynamics come into play.

Frank this is a observatory question, I hope it is okay, it seems that precip is being stopped at NY Ct border, is there some type of current or flow that is blocking it?
Also anyone know if westchester has the same bans as NYC of no cars on roads at all?

There is a lot of subsidence right now. Could be a reason why precip is having a hard time coming west, even thought that was not modeled until later anyway. My thinking is 9-10pm right now for precip to get into NYC and eastern NJ

No dry slot. Storm is still well offshore. I just posted its east of Delmarva

Here is a break down of when the precip from the main storm comes onshore. As you can see, break was expected by 7pm.

No, because even if it closes off near New England it will still push bands into NYC. Just not as intense and it won't be long duration
