Sometimes trained spotters aren't that good tbh. The trained spotter in my town sucks. I actually took a trained spotter class and got a certificate but I have lost it. I just contacted NWS Albany to see if they have it on file as I want to start making obs in the future.

You are so right Hyde! Where did you take that class? does each town have them? would love to do that if I have spare time!

LOL, hyde!
I hope you can get your status back.I rely on them because I am almost 70 with creaky, arthritic knees and don't want to slip and fall getting a number of measurements.Years back, I always did my own.Let this be a warning to all snowaholics. You will never stop being one,LOL.I've been one since 1960.

I'm 60 and I'm starting to feel those creaks, lol, so I hear ya. NWS already got back to me and told me they will look through their spotter database to try to find a copy of it. They also recommend taking a refresher course every 2 years so I may do that also.

Hyde, they ask that you go back every couple of years and recert. They will give you a new spotter number so they know that you have returned. I went back last year after four years for the first one...

Jim, if you go to the NWS site there is a skywarn logo, click on it and it will tell you where and when the classes are. The ones by me are usually in the spring as they like to train folks for severe weather.

Re: December 1st-2nd Winter Storm Observations
To give you an idea how crazy this storm was, the first pic is my front yard, which faces east (the direction the snow was coming at me) and the second one is the north side of my backyard, protected by trees and the fence. 3" difference in 50'. No, there was no drifting in the front, just more exposure to where the snow was falling. We also had a lot of white rain and mixing midday, so no accumulation then. Nice 1.5" on the nighttime thump though. Ended up with about 3.5". Well, on to the next!

I took it in Poughkeepsie but there should be classes closer to you, maybe in Kingston. Like Janet said, check out skywarn info on NWS Albany website.

Re: December 1st-2nd Winter Storm Observations
I got an inch of snow last night as a heavy Band came through was snowing pretty good around 11 p.m. about a half an inch Sunday morning so 1.5 inch for the total storm. I should add that was on cold surfaces only a thick covering on the road and sidewalks a little bit disappointing considering what the short-range models were showing for my area but we'll take it to start off December good to get on the board

Re: December 1st-2nd Winter Storm Observations
IF and a lmalways a big IF the temps were as stated by Billings and Heehaw in the 28-30* range we would have had a low end SECS due to the melt we experienced all day basically up here in NNJ or the borderline areas.
3.5 at home in Hillsdale. 4.6 -5.0 in Allendale, 8" in Franklin Lakes and Oakland.
This is a great start to winter.
Now do t freak the freak over the brief moderation for s few days and then we reload the pattern with cold and stomriness.
EPS has a massive warm bias lately and is getting itself....burned. GEFS even on their old.platform are doing much better as is the GFS OP run. Some LR things here and I'll transfers over along with other info when I am done with my Accupuncture and massage wow oop!!

Re: December 1st-2nd Winter Storm Observations
First time post, just want to say hi, I am a Brit now living in Cranford. Love following anything about the weather, I pretty much have zero knowledge about models etc but find it fascinating. Anyways, I have followed for quite a while now and thought it was time to say hello and post a pic from yesterday

Re: December 1st-2nd Winter Storm Observations
Here was the view from my apartment in the Albany region earlier this morning after the storm had passed. I ended up getting a total of 22” from the event! The nearby NWS station at Albany airport ended up with 22.6”, putting this at #8 on Albany’s all time biggest snowstorms. This was Albany’s biggest snowstorm since 1993!
