Re: Valentine's Day 2016. NYC first sub zero in 22 years
New winter records lows aren't set much anymore at Central Park and other very old stations. The most recent below zero record low set in Feb was over 70 yrs ago. Most of them are 100 yrs old. Below zero is rare now in NYC, in mid Feb at that, unheard of previously.

Who wants to start the thread in the Broken Records section of the forum? This day needs to be documented and archived!

This cold also shows how snow cover could be a little overrated. It's about the source of the cold and the winds speeds and directions that really matter. A couple of days ago I posted an 850mb temp map showing -30*C. I've never seen that before. The source of this cold - as CP accurately stated - is coming straight from the Hudson / Quebec

Actually, I'm going to move this entire thread to the Broken Records section of the forum later today. I think it'll be cool to look back on one day. I'll change the title to reflect a broken record in CPK

Valentine's Day 2016. NYC first sub zero in 22 years
Central Park hit -1 at 7:10 and also at the 8 am reading breaking the old record low of 2 degrees for the date.
This is NYC's first sub zero reading since January 1994's -2.
After several close calls the past twelve years this was the perfect setup other than lack of snow cover.

Frank in NYC specifically I agree with you snow cover is over rated.
To go sub zero NYC needs exactly what happened with this event. The source has to be NNW of us. More north than northwest. This outbreak isn't bringing record cold to the upper Mississippi valley or Chicago. When they are getting record cold I always write those off for the chances on bringing us record cold. To much time for them to modify over the Great Lakes and the Midwest.
Also this air didn't sink way south and bring record lows to Atlanta Charlotte and places like that's always another sign it's not happening here. Washington and Baltimore did not even get in single digits as this was our air mass straight from the north country.
NYC Also needs a steady wind which they had all night to carry away some of the effects of the heat island. Also wind direction should be NNW which it was most of the night not WNW OR W Which we usually get in cold outbreaks we get from the upper Midwest.
In January 1994 that was the perfect setup for the suburbs and NYC kind of came along for the ride. There was deep snow cover and calm winds that night and as I've stated numerous times most of the HV and NW NJ fell to -20 to -30. Poughkeepsie recorded -22, Newburgh -20, my back yard -23 and NW NJ -32 I believe is Sparta but not sure of the town. With readings like that within 50 miles of the city Central Park fell to -2 despite the conditions not being ideal for them.
One more mountain climbed. At least this cold outbreak should assure us of not having the warmest meteorological winter ever. Up until three days ago we were at number 1. Just another thing that makes this cold outbreak extraordinary.

To our CP congrats and great work tracking this bad biy, truly amazing.
I certainly remember that 1994 and it was Walpack NJ that recorded a low of -34, you are right Sparta was -32 oh and the wind chills were -40 plus below zero that morning . More like Vladstok Russia that NNJ.
Edut: just looked up the stats and ZOO u and are live right next door to the lowest temp ever recorded in the great state before the 1994 tying of this record.

Re: Valentine's Day 2016. NYC first sub zero in 22 years
The wind was shaking my house last night and kept the temps from bottoming out. Once the wind stopped at about 5 am the temps dropped from 6 to -2 at 7 am. The wind stopping was the key

If I see on the news people on blankets sunning themselves in early March, then I'll be wondering.

Re: Valentine's Day 2016. NYC first sub zero in 22 years
You know how December is usually the month people will be seen with those "ugly sweaters." With the record breaking warmth in December causing people to lose the appetite over them, I told them to save them for Easter (which is March 27th this year). If I had said Valentine's Day, I would have nailed it.
Also, if If you take the period from 2011-15, December is warmer than March (41.8 average for March and 42.9 for December). If 2016-20 follows up, then I guess the next 30-year update will have March colder than December (or at least closer to each other) I know this record cold has nothing to do with March or December since it's February, but I wanted to throw it out there.
