Re: December 2020 Observations and Discussion
Rain sleet snowflakes and even some of that grapple stuff all at the same time. Yet radar still says all snow...Very interesting. Is that due to high dew point? Or that the higher temps are much closer to the surface? Or is that kind of the same thing?

Re: December 2020 Observations and Discussion
I'll try answering my own question. If you look ahead another few hours, we see that while the 540 line appears well to my south (woo hoo!), all of the low level air is flowing N/NE from the warmer gulf states (boo!). None of that cold air from the last storm is sticking around. And so, we get Pooville!! And I think my mixed bag of precip at present represents that transition from colder surface air temps to warmer as that precip and wind direction continue moving north. I think...

Meant to comment on this. It made me chuckle. Also, nice analysis and thanks for sharing. I did not see a flake today. But looks like some of you did

Also, congrats on the new tag!

Holy cow! Models are putting out over 2" of rain for some areas Xmas Eve. Add in melting snow pack and there is going to be some flooding for sure.

Re: December 2020 Observations and Discussion
A brisk 23 degrees this morning. Yes, the temp drop was rapid. Heat is back on.
And at sunrise, a surprise dusting of snow covering the grass, deck, etc. Driveway and road are uncovered. I just saw it from my kitchen window when I went to watch the birds at the feeders.

Re: December 2020 Observations and Discussion
Models are beginning to sniff out the low level cold and are showing an increasing threat of freezing rain N&W of NYC on New Years Day afternoon into evening. A 1030mb HP to the north will keep enough cold air in place for precipitation to start out as snow/ice before changing to rain.

Although the GFS looks aggressive in comparison to the NAM, I actually think it's on the right track. As we get even closer, I can see both models showing higher amounts of freezing rain for some locations. I think I-95 and points S&E are fine and will see mostly plain rain.
GFS freezing rain:
