An epic storm for sure that we still talk about 130-plus years later!
Interesting feature of the storm that they make passing reference to here, is that on March 10, the day before the storm, high temperatures were in the mid-to-upper 50s across the area. I always try to remember that when we're tracking a storm and folks look at the temps the day before and say "it's going to be too warm for snow." Like the Feb. 13 storm this year, this storm was a good reminder that it's the temps during a storm that matter, not the day before.
Actually other than those couple of mild days before the storm the month of March 1888 the average temperature in NYC was 29.9 degrees. I can't even think of the last time NYC had a January or February average temperature below 30 degrees. It's been several years at least.
Different time, different climate.
Well, even the day of the storm. I think it got down to 8 degrees that day? When was the last time it was 8 degrees in March.
March 13th the day the storm was winding down, the high in NYC was 12 and the low was 6. Perfect temperatures to preserve a three foot snow pack.
With snow on the ground I like it as cold as it can get for as long as it can stay that way, with no snow on the ground at this stage of my life I just find the cold annoying.

My Hellebores are flowering. My Irises are up three inches. My Buddleia never went dormant. Nor my Heuchera. Swamp maples have cherry red buds. My Lilacs have big buds. My grass is growing. Hostas are peeking through. My Brunera never went dormant. It is as if this were May

Just a 50 mile shift East and I would have had 30 inches plus in Mahwah NJ.My Buddy's place in NE PA got 36.
Started out as a raging blizzard, heavy snow and high winds.I was watching the Weather Channel and a reporter said it was sleeting in AC.Bad omen.About an hour later, my heavy snow changed to heavy sleet.Total of 17 inches, 3 of which was sleet.A joy to shovel, lol.

Not happy with the weekend washouts either. But I guess I'd rather have them now when temperatures are still a little on the chilly side than from May through August when I'll be looking to be outside more often.

Re: Banter Thread 9.0
Dr Ryan Maue wrote an excellent thread on the warmth and in concert with post cold mid 1800's. I know it'll be well that was 140 years ago etc etc. Okay then why was the medieval warm period so warm Greenland had various settlements of Nordic cultures residing for a few centuries? Cycles of the grand scheme of Mother Nature.

Great article:https://www.climatedepot.com/2024/03/29/university-of-oslo-emeritus-professor-ole-humlum-believing-that-one-minor-constituent-of-the-atmosphere-co2-controls-nearly-all-aspects-of-climate-is-naive-and-entirely-unrealistic/
The global climate system represents a multifaceted system, involving sun, planets, atmosphere, oceans, land, geological processes, biological life, and complex interactions between them. Many components and their mutual coupling are still not fully understood or perhaps not even recognised.

With planet Earth turning into a run away greenhouse aka Venus, I believe it’s time to seek some real estate on top of Mt. Washington. I should be safe enough up there for fears of another non eventful winter. Who’s with me?

Re: Banter Thread 9.0
Surprisingly no heavy rain so far up here. Yesterday it did not rain. So going on two days and very little rain.
However, yesterday I checked my Irises and was disappointed. They have been staying about almost an inch above ground for a while now with no growth. Then this morning I went outside with my coffee. Cue the surprise. They are up about 1.5 inches over yesterday. If I had not made note of it yesterday and reflected on it, I would not have known before and after. Mother Nature hit the gas pedal late last night and got them growing.
