I can't post this in thread about storm but it really pisses me off when mets or reporters produce such low snow totals, 3-6? maybe less, I highly doubt it. Am not bashing anyone in met field as they know what they are doing but in this occasion I think what might be happening is they are affraid to say more due to the last bust, BUT this is going to leave Monday morning a possible nightmare if no precautions or preparations are taken, I hope by tonight or latest tomorrow morning the totals are upped if models hold steady, they looked good from last night, especially GEM which had me around 12-18,

Al I am stoked what about you?!

Jman going by last nights guidance to call for 12-18 down by Yonkers area would make no sense right now. There looks to be a lot of uncertainty especially regarding the mid levels warming above freezing as far north as even the HV. NYV area now is in a battle zone and changes to sleet and freezing rain are not only possibly but according to current guidance likely for a period. If it's while precip is heaviest amounts get cut down drastically. With the current thinking it's the correct call. Why even care all hat matters is what you end up with on the ground. NWS has me for 20-30 inches last storm and I got 4. I'd rather have receive the 20-30 and had them predicting 4-8.

From last night CP, I can see us right on the battle zone area. They had Mahwah going over to a mix on Monday while we stayed at all snow, but it is getting close now. What you say reminds me of the March 93 storm when that 3 inches of sleet turned what could have been an epic 36 inch snowstorm into 18 inches, three of which was the sleet.

And yes, I like the BD Blizzard type of forecasts....1 to 3 a couple of days before turning into a blizzard.

I know. Seems like we had our big chance last week and many of us missed out. Just by our unlucky trends, this will be another slush storm. UGH. Can't get hopes up now as latest models seem to be warmer.

The funny thing about it is this. In the last eight days I've received over 15 inches of snow from three different storms. Normally I'd be elated but yet I don't ever think I can remember being more frustrated as a weather watcher than this past week. Of course this monday storm is turning out to be the icing on the cake. Two days ago every outlet talked about there being no precipitation type problems with the storm it's just how far north it will go to see if the snow will affect the big cities.  We've now gone from that to multiple extreme precipitation type issues and temperature issues not only on the surface but mostly in the mid levels of the atmosphere. To have a projected high right now on Monday of 16° and to be worrying about changeover issues, that's just the last insult if it happens.

Hey, CP, crazy stuff like that happens.Remember that 93-94 winter with the crazy cold ice storm.I swear I left my office and it was raining as hard as a thunderstorm at 20 degrees! 1/2 inch of ice froze instantly on the walks in no time and it stayed below 10 degrees for one solid week.

Buy, yeah, a real kick in the arse if we mix up in the HV.If we do, the City, Coast and LI get bupkus out of this.

Good reminder there Doc.

There are many things that I remember about the winter of 93 – 94.

The first was the morning that the entire area including New York City had subzero temperatures, and in some cases in the -20 to -30° range. I remember I took a picture of my thermometer that morning, and if I still have it around I should post it as my avatar. It was -23° that morning in Monroe. New York City was -2° and I remember one town in northwest New Jersey set the state record low that morning with -34°. Almost every major reporting station in the Hudson Valley reported -20° readings from Poughkeepsie to Newburgh to Kingston to Middletown. Could you imagine what the news media would do with that now? They would treat it like the end of the world. The other thing was the back-to-back snowstorms with over a foot each. When that was over and with the extreme cold it really did look like Anchorage or Nome Alaska at that point.

However I had forgotten all about that severe ice storm that you mentioned. That was one of the craziest things I've ever seen. Heavy rain, temperatures in the teens, and a thunderstorm at one point with freezing rain. Of course that winter it never warmed up so trees and everything was encased in ice for weeks. We had about 2 feet of snow on the ground and a half inch thick sheet of ice on top of it. You didn't have to worry about walking in the deep snow because you walked right on top of it. The whole landscape looked like an ice palace for weeks. It was beautiful but destructive of course. I hope we don't have anything approaching that coming up Sunday night Monday. I love winter weather but ice storms I can do without.

'93-'94 kind of gets overshadowed by the epic King of them all '95-'96, but it was an incredible winter to remember.

Yep, 1 1/2 foot of concrete for weeks frozen solid.
