Re: Wx Banter Thread 1.0
Boston got 16 inches of snow from the storm. They're at 98 inches for the season. They probably have a snow pack 7 foot snow pack.

Hi, Taffy.
The thing is if the gutters are freezing up, how and why did the melted snow water get in there? Is there a lot of sun on the roof during the day? are there periods above freezing? If those two are not a factor, then it has to be an insulation problem which allows heat from the house to get up in the attic and warm the roof.
I am like your Dad, a home maintenance nut, and I love trying to get to the cause of things like this and correct them.

Not sure if you were joking about the 7 foot snowpack thing Frank but it was 32 inches in Boston going into this storm. Maybe mid 40's now which blows away their all time record.
You would need 150 inches of snow at least to fall in 3 weeks to achieve a 7 foot snowpack.

hi..saw on the news last night.if you have an icicle problem you most likely gave an insulation problem...docstox12 wrote:Taffy wrote:I didn't ask him because he sent it through FB. Re: Wx Banter Thread 1.0
I may have to go into witness protection on this site for admitting this, but as much as I like a good snowstorm (or several) I would NOT want to have what Boston has right now. Way too disruptive for me thank you.

And just think if there is a sudden warm up with a two or three inch soaking rain up in that area.Disruptive will be a kind word then more like catastrophic!

Excellent point. As big a problem as it is with everything buried under this snow now, the closer we get to March, the bigger risk that if most of this snow is still around when they get get a 55* day with pouring rain, that they will have major flooding issues.docstox12 wrote:And just think if there is a sudden warm up with a two or three inch soaking rain up in that area.Disruptive will be a kind word then more like catastrophic!

This whole mess with the cold air timing is all Canada's fault. Let's take them over, plunder all of their resources and turn the entire country into the world largest fishing/hockey rink/snow lovers vacation spot..

Re: Wx Banter Thread 1.0
I mentioned in the previous banter thread that entering 2014-15, the greatest deviation in season snowfall between NYC and Boston was from 1992-93 at 59.4" (Boston got 83.9" and NYC got 24.5"). Well as of today, Boston is at 95.7" and NYC is at 21.1", a 74.6" difference. The only way the deviation will not break the record is if we start having snowstorms for NYC where Boston either has the snow suppressed or gets all rain (a la February 25-26, 2010).

This has to be the winter of our heartbreak. So many possibilities and so much pain. Maybe it is Canada. Maybe North Korea. Maybe some guy who joined last year and jinxed us. My guess is that winter is over even though some models show potential. Just not our year and that's okay. My brother visited Boston and its a very dangerous situation with significant property damage. Guess we all lost. I wish that I could walk away from this site until next winter, but that will not happen. Every potential storm gets my hopes up. There's nasty storms in the Spring and thunder in the summer. Guess I'd say goodbye, but that can never happen. So moderators and all, keep up the fun and good work. As always, a hearty thank you for your dedication and knowledge.

Grselig, excellent mention of that late season Blizzard.Had to close my shop down as cancellations started pouring in that morning.Just got home with 3 or 4 inches on the ground around 12 noon.12 or 13 inches in Mahwah NJ and temperatures plunged.CP has some good remembrances of that storm, maybe he'll see this and add to it.Will never forget the NOOA blurb..."Today we will experience the rarest of things....an April Blizzard!"

I wish I remembered that storm. I do recall Feb 12 1983 the day after Marvin Haggler beat Tony Sibson

Re: Wx Banter Thread 1.0
Oh wow....another storm I remember well. April 1982 I was eight months pregnant and my favorite aunt had just passed away. We were living in Andover then and with ten inches of snow my husband wasn't letting me drive to Brooklyn. I was so sad but he was right. And it had been cold in the days before the storm so the snow stayed with us for awhile. Sorry it's not a particularly happy memory but it's always how I remember snow in April. It was a beautiful snow and she was a beautiful woman!

Over? Please tell that to this frigid air mass that I can't get comfortable in. Half of my job is outdoors and the heat in my apartment is trash. I'm literally counting down the days to spring. I'm cold 24/7 at work and at home. I'm looking forward to some comfortable air one of these days.

Re: Wx Banter Thread 1.0
I fully respect the NWS and love the work they do, but had to laugh at the 4am Mt. Holly discussion. They say snow may be over performing along I-95, and that they have some 4" reports in and around Philly. They then say they may have to upgrade to warning status at 4:15, but snow will still end in a few hours. In other words, since we may hit 5" just before this ends, we'll issue a warning once we hit 5" just before the storm ends. Lol. Does sort of defeat the purpose of a "warning," no?

12z CMC, what a small strip of snow. Looks good for me i'll def take it. But isn't this storm supposed to be warm? Friggin Boston yet again jackpots with 12+, I know by this point they are hating it though!

It doesn't matter now, the final solution won't look like this for us, or Boston or anyone else.
