Al Your very well in control of yourself I am beyond annoyed at this, it is what it is though I guess. Maybe we can finally get a real storm sun/mon we will see.algae888 wrote:To give you a comparison of snow totals near me in Westchester County these are all less than 10 Mi and as little as 5 mi from my house these are from the National Weather Service trained spotters Harrison New York 9.5 in Mount Kisco 11 in Katonah 13.5 Armonk 13.5.

Incredibly we had two feet in a large area of Orange County and I still have power. I probably shouldn't have said anything because it can still happen today. Trees are struggling against the weight.

There are currently 244,000 people without power in New Jersey (including several of my co-workers). They did restore about 90,000 since last night. They expect additional outages today as more tree limbs/power lines come down.

Yeah I guess the shore in CT just doesnt have as strong trees, they had 8 inches or so (my mother is not a measurer just eyeballs lol) Only time I can remember that many outages when I lived there was the hurricane bob in 1992 or 93 and after I left october snowstorm and sandy.CPcantmeasuresnow wrote:jmanley32 wrote:Somehow westchester and most areas around the NYC area escaped power issues but not so in CT from new haven and east past clinton there is about 8 inches and almost the entire area lost power, my friend had a tree fall on his house and if trees arent down everything id hanging so low that roads are impassable or 1 lane down center. 124,000 outages and the majority coming from those 6 or 7 smaller towns. I’ll say this, I hope we have a good snow melt over the next 3 or 4 days, because add another 5, 10, 20” of wet snow from Monday’s potential storm on what we have now and you’d have roof collapses too (may be some anyway).

Yeah I know jersey suffered as well, but seems PA, NJ and CT were worst hit in terms of power outages. Just saw a video of a transformer blowing in scarsdale NY. Outages went up about 8700 here now 28,700.billg315 wrote:There are currently 244,000 people without power in New Jersey (including several of my co-workers). Re: Wx Banter Thread 3.0
Ok, it is quite possible I’ve been hanging out with CP too long on OTI, but there is DEFINITELY something kooky going on with the snow measurement being reported yesterday. I just looked at NWS Mount Holly snow reports ((which I’ll post in the Obs thread). I measured 7.75” (subtracting the additional .5” that fell in the morning per NWS’s sick and twisted measurement guideline as outlined by CP on the storm thread). The trained spotter for my town measured 6.5” but that was a couple hours before snow ended and totals can vary within a town, so that makes some sense and is consistent with my measurement. BUT!!! Here is where it gets weird: A trained spotter in Hillsborough, a town bordering my town to the south (where they presumably had similar rates and snow duration as me, since they are only a few miles away) measured 19”!!!! That is over 11” more than me. There was no noticeable difference in duration of snow, mixing issues, or intensity (both towns under same death band). At face value if Hillsborough started snowing heavy an hour before me (a stretch) and lasted a full hour later (a stretch) that would be 2 extra hours of accumulating snow. That still shouldn’t account for 11” additional. Further complicating matters the town to my north Bridgewater got 14”. That is 6” more than me which I guess is more possible because it’s a very large township and their spotter in theory could be well north and East of me where the death band lasted longer. What I don’t get is the Hillsborough measurement.

There are other oddities as well but this is the situation I’m most personally aware of.

When intense snow bands setup someone always gets screwed big time unfortunately You and Al were the jackpot so to speak for the screw zone.

Re: Wx Banter Thread 3.0
Well yonkers actually did better than mt. vernon, per trained spotter near me it was 6, makes sense cuz midafternoon it was 3 and it snowed really hard after that well into the evening. I honestly believe the qpf was prolly double that or more cuz I have rarely seen it snow so hard for so long. Oh well , at least i am way above average now. Still want a BIG one, these motherazilla or less totals are rather boring to me.CPcantmeasuresnow wrote:jmanley32 wrote:makes me dislike this even more grrrr, lolCPcantmeasuresnow wrote:Actually we received 24 JMAN and Docs town next door 26.

Re: Wx Banter Thread 3.0
around 1pm yesterday i only had 3" on the ground and i moaned and groaned a bit...then it started to blitzkrieg (i'll stay away from a certain word CP hates) for about a good 3-4 hrs and ended up with 11" confirmed by a trained spotter.
all in all i say i did good since no heavy bands went over me..now Mikey P on the other hand....

Helps some but the big difference was being underneath one of those bands all day.
Plus we're at 600 feet Jman maybe 200 in Yonkers. It helps but it's not like we're living on Mt. Washington
Add the 35 miles N&W and the 400 extra feet and it will always benefit us no doubt though.

Yes CP, you're right, we were very lucky as that band just stuck there for hours and piled up the snow at 2-3 inch an hour rates.Hey, we have been in the scroo zone while we watched bands that refused to get over the Hudson River.Mother Nature spreads the wealth but you have to be patient. In 35 years of living in Mahwah NJ, the heaviest snowstorm I got was 24 inches.Yesterday's 26 inches blows that away and I've only been up here 3 /12 years.

Yes but you guys do usually get the higher snows and thats just climatological location. I aint mad, not people just to east and west and SE of me getting double is just crap, plain and simple stinks.docstox12 wrote:CPcantmeasuresnow wrote:docstox12 wrote:CPcantmeasuresnow wrote:Actually we received 24 JMAN and Docs town next door 26.
