Polar Vortex. It is a large upper air anomaly that cannot be seen. It's a North Pole phenomena, but sometimes it travels the polar jet and gets as far south as the Great Lakes. It drags down Arctic air

Back in the day there was no term for this PV so it was called an Arctic High 70's and 80's, the Polar Express in the late 80's and 90's- they sensationalized this IMO - as a kid we called it just plain.................. cold! Suspect   Everything needs a label nowadays.

Also let's not have any talk today about breaking the all time record. We're still in the 7th spot at 57.3 inches. That's 18.4 inches to go that's a long way off. Let's try and get NYC to the mid 60's or at least the top 3 before we utter those words again.

Of course no one is rooting for it more than me but silently. These storms sense when we discuss these things and turn against us.

Yes I am perfectly sane in every other aspect of my life other than winter weather and snow.

But CP, some storms are so strong that even the waves of weenieness that are eminating from these pages cannot dampen their potential.

And Doc, my back has never been more messed up from shoveling so I'm right there with you, but we've had a few days to recover so it'll be okay. It's the next one that may follow quick on this one that has my spine a bit nervous. My flat roof as well.

What is it his I am hearing - dissent among the Snow Weenie ranks?

let me clear my throat...............

You need to snap out of it! Take off the skirt and pull up your pants (not the depends ones get rid of those pronto), put on your big boy underpants and for God's sake put your Snow Weenie face on and get ready to do battle. We will go out there and take this one. Now fall into order and wipe this ludicrous thought from your memory!!!!!!

Anymore of such talk and you will be admonished from the Snow Weenie Kingdom never to return again!!

Carry on!

Yes that is why I posted it - I posted the NWS in LA yesterday saying this is going to be the strongest storm with the most overall area implications for Cali in 3 years - pretty strong statement but you see why from that radar shot - looks like Sandy (she was better all the way around though)!

Hopefully doc comes to his senses. The next step is interrogation by Snowman and nobody wants that. It could get ugly.

Big run incoming from the 12z GFS. It is slightly warmer, which may actually be a good thing. The gradient is still well south of us with a lot of moisture located in the center of the country.

It is snowing very lightly from late Sunday afternoon (there was some snow in the morning of Sunday as well per GFS) through 5am, then the moderate snow moves in around 6am
