Snow, consider the HV Monroe area by me and CP.It hands down beats my old area Mahwah yearly by 10 to 20 inches more snow.CP's figures show a 50 inch average up here per year recently.Saw it in the November storm, over 9 inches here ,Mahwah 3.In March 2013, we had a 17 inch storm here, Mawah 5 or 6.
I would love to go up there once I graduate, I live for snow, as you can tell haha. I saw the differences in snowpack between here and there myself the weekend before Juno. That Sunday night before it, I went up to the Outback in Monroe with family, huge difference in snowpack even just going up the PIP a bit. Insane.
Oh, and check this out, wtf! what's with that weird area in Rockland/Northern Westchester?
That map is for the most part an estimate since there are no reliable 30 year reporting stations in most of the area. Think about it, NYC doesn't even have a reliable reporting station. Plus the map is for the period 1981-2010. the 1980's were the most snowless decade this area has ever seen.
Ah, thanks for letting me know! That map has been bugging me since I saw it the first time.

Tracking storms never gets old. But the lack of sleep catches up to you. Man, I'm beat. Plus all the storms are coming at once this season.

Snow Man it's very disturbing everyone's true colors are coming out.
And forget Grey Beards suggestion about the Arctic circle, cold yes but it's way to dry there. A 4 inch snow is a blizzard to them.

If you look at my avatar you will see I agree with this wholeheartedly. I did that this afternoon actually. After I drove two of my staff members home from work I came home and did my drive way then my two elderly neighbors as well. After a hard days work I simply stopped and went for a walk down my block. It was totally silent except the sound of the snow falling which if you stop to listen to is an amazing sound. If you combine that with the sight of the snow covered landscape and the smell of the atmosphere when snow is falling...fugget about it! Nothing like it. If this is the last snowfall for my back yard this season it was a pretty darn good one.

Your a good man Doc to help with the elderly neighbors.
I have many fond memories of walking late at night in raging snowstorms in Mahwah with nobody out, just me.Yes, you CAN hear the snow fall, an amazing sound it is.Love to see the big flakes in the streetlights. Will never forget the Feb 1983 snowstorm with 3 inch an hour rates for 6 straight hours. Standing on the street in front of my house 75 feet away, I could not see the light it was coming down so heavy. You could literally see it accumulating.

Cp I'll be darned. You're right about the Artic Circle. Didn't know that. Googled it after I saw your post and it said:
The tundra isn't defined by any amount of snowfall. It does, however, have very long winters and therefore snow can fall during most months. But in general, if it is very continental (dry) then less than 10 inches of snow might fall, while it may exceed 100 inches under the right conditions in a few places.

I had that same experience with Nemo two years ago. 2-4" an hr watching it accumulate. Ended up with 29" that storm.

Re: Wx Banter Thread 1.0
You got me curious as to where it was the snowiest place on Earth.Another google find:
Snowiest Places on Earth •I'm not sure what the heaviest annual snowfall by location is, however, Mt. Baker in Washington State averages over 600" a year and holds the world record snowfall in a season: over 1,000 inches! It has been speculated that Thompson Pass in Alaska receives more snow, but it's too remote to get accurate readings.
•The Coastal Mountains of Western North America, stretching from Southern California to Alaska, produce the greatest snowfalls on the planet.
•The most snowfall recorded in one year occurred at Mount Baker, Washington State USA, where 1140" of snow fell in 1998-1999.
•However, the snowiest location on the planet is likely elsewhere where no official record-keeping or weather station exists. For instance, it is estimated that the mountains and glaciers that makeup the Juneau Ice Field average over 1000" of snowfall by geophysical analysis.
•Another remote location, Mount Fairweather, Alaska is one of the world's tallest coastal mountains- rising 4,671 m (15,325 ft) just 20km (12 miles) from the pacific ocean. It estimated by geoscientists and meteorologists to receive well over 100 inches (254 cm) of liquid precipitation. This, coupled with below-freezing average temperatures and wintertime temperatures reguarly dropping to extremes (-50°F (-46°C)), produces the greatest snowfall on the planet.

Re: Wx Banter Thread 1.0
Since I'm young, the best snowstorm I can remember was the Boxing Day Blizzard in 2010. Extremely heavy snow from around 2PM to around 12AM. Finished with around 2 feet. Impressive for such a short duration. I remember reading something about a possible blizzard over a week before on the 7online board, then I forgot about it since I didn't follow the forums as much back then. On the morning of the 25th, I turned on the TV and it was on NBC 4 I believe, and the first thing I heard and saw was like "major blizzard to hit the area tomorrow". I was extremely happy and excited, to say the least.
I remember the day of the storm. Still in shock, I was watching live cams in NYC since snow was supposed to start there first, it did, and it took almost an hour after that to start up here, I was actually starting to call bust lol, needless to say, only a few hours later I was in paradise.
And with that, I leave you with a photo that was taken around 8 or 9 PM that night, and one taken the morning after. I have never seen a storm nearly as good since then, hopefully I do real soon. I want a new favorite!

All I want for my birthday is a big storm. 1996, Boxing Day, 1978, 1983. Vintage years. I am sick and tired of 4 inch nuisance pieces of drizzle. Men like Snow247 and SnowMan, CP and SROC and Doc (although I know you are inching for the warmth) and Syosnow (apologies if I misspelled your name) and others who I missed, so apologies, are quality folk who stand for the purity and goodness of winter. When winter ends, great, but I hope it does not whither away without a fight. FYI, I appreciate extremes so when its 110 with high humidity, I'll take it. It reminds me of how great Winter is. I don't want to see flowers. i want to see a mountain of snow.

Haha, snow is the best. Give me 2 months of sun and warmth, and 10 months of cold and lots of snow (250"+) and I would be a happy guy.

I want to track another tropical system. Sandy was a biatch but tracking her when I was with EPAWA was a top 5 weather moment of my life.

That must have been some experience. Frightening for the potential destruction, but it had to be somehow exhilarating. Hopefully never again with that kind of destruction.

I want another Sandy type storm because it was mighty interesting, but then I think about all the damage and such, and how scary the wind was, and then I never want it to happen again.
Barely got any rain, only crazy wind, you could hear the roar constantly for hours. School was out for a week here.

Sandy was really the first time I was truly scared of the weather. 3 small children and trees falling around us with neighbors roofs caved in is something I do not want to relive. i can only image what the Coast went through

No way do I want to relive Sandy. Let's stick with tropical storms and Jman type winds, you know, the 40-50 mph kind.
